The Executive Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government, Hon. Kehinde Akande, this morning of Saturday, paid an on-the-spot visit to the scene of a fire incident that gutted several shops at the Railway side, close to Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan.
The fire, which reportedly started in the early hours of Saturday, destroyed goods and property worth millions of naira belonging to traders in the area.
Hon. Akande, who was accompanied by security personnels sympathized with the affected shop owners and expressed sadness over the extent of the damage.
While addressing the victims, the Chairman described the incident as unfortunate and painful.

“This morning’s incident is heartbreaking. We feel your pain. As a government that is close to the people, we cannot watch you suffer this loss alone,” Akande said.
He assured the traders that the local government, in collaboration with the Oyo State Government and relevant agencies, would assess the level of damage and work towards providing necessary support to cushion the effect.
“We will engage the necessary authorities to ascertain the cause of this fire and also see how government can come to your aid. I urge everyone to remain calm as we work on immediate and long-term measures to assist you,” he added.
The Chairman further called on market leaders and traders to prioritize safety precautions, including proper electrical wiring and the provision of fire extinguishers in shops to prevent future occurrences.
Some of the affected shop owners appreciated the Chairman for his prompt visit and swift response, saying his presence had given them hope.
Personnel of the Oyo State Fire Service were said to have responded quickly and succeeded in putting out the fire before it spread to more shops.
