Dr. Ifeoluwa Akande hit the ground running on Saturday, August 8, immediately after resuming work, with a visit to communities affected by runoff water from the Ladoke Akintola Airport.

Addressing community members during the visit, Dr. Akande reaffirmed that Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has the welfare of the people at heart, noting that the Governor had directed an immediate assessment of the situation to mitigate the negative impact of the airport project on affected communities.

According to Dr. Akande, some houses in the area would ordinarily have qualified for demolition to create the required setback. However, Governor Makinde, in his wisdom, opted to preserve the already clustered community while ensuring that an appropriate setback is maintained.

The community leaders warmly received Dr. Akande and expressed their appreciation to Governor Makinde for his concern and intervention. They, however, appealed to the state government to urgently address the erosion of their roads caused by runoff water from the airport area.

Responding to their concerns, Dr. Akande assured the residents that Governor Makinde would not abandon them, adding that their complaints would receive prompt attention and that efforts would be made to provide a lasting solution to the challenge.

The day concluded with a brief but significant encounter between Dr. Akande and Governor Makinde at the airport, further underscoring the administration’s commitment to addressing issues affecting residents and host communities.

The Honourable Member representing Akinyele Constituency One in the Oyo State House of Assembly (OYHA), Hon. Lekan Monsur Abiola, has once again demonstrated his commitment to integrity, accountability, and grassroots empowerment by fulfilling his promise to the Tailors Association of Nigeria (TAN), Akinyele Chapter, through the presentation of a complete tailoring machine and essential tailoring equipment to the winner of the association’s competition.

Chairman, House of Representatives committee on Digital, Information Technology and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide, has reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to enacting legislations that will position Nigeria to harness the opportunities of the rapidly evolving digital economy while safeguarding citizens’ rights and promoting sustainable economic growth.

Olajide stated this at the two day National Assembly Digital Policy Retreat, held at Zuma Rock Resort, Minna, Niger state, under the theme, “Building a Future Ready Legislative Framework: Digital Innovation, Safety and Economic Growth.”

The retreat was organized by the National Assembly in partnership with Meta and the Advocacy for Policy and Innovation (API), bringing together federal lawmakers, technology experts, policy advocates and key stakeholders in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

Speaking during the retreat, the Chairman of the House Committee on Digital and Information Technology and Cybersecurity said the programme aligns with the federal government’s National Digital Agenda and reflects the determination of the legislature to keep pace with the rapid evolution of technology through responsive lawmaking.

According to him, the increasing influence of digital technologies on governance, commerce, education, security and social interaction reinforces the need for legislative frameworks capable of addressing emerging challenges while creating an enabling environment for innovation to flourish.

Olajide stressed that the National Assembly remains committed to developing legislation that encourages technological advancement, protects digital rights, promotes responsible innovation and strengthens Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.

“The retreat is in line with the National Digital Agenda and reflects our determination as lawmakers to keep pace with the rapid evolution of technology. As legislators, we must ensure that our legal frameworks are dynamic enough to respond to emerging digital realities while creating opportunities for innovation, investment and inclusive economic growth,” he said.

He explained that digital transformation has become a major driver of national development, making it imperative for lawmakers to continuously engage industry experts, technology companies and policy stakeholders in developing legislation that meets international standards and addresses Nigeria’s peculiar needs.

Oyo State is moving closer to the commencement of operations at the Oyo Sugar and Derivatives Industries Limited factory in Iseyin, following the arrival of a technical team from Saba Exports Ltd, an advanced sugar industrial technology company based in India.

The delegation, led by Managing Director Khan Waseem Akhlaq, was received in the state over the weekend to begin the pre-commissioning and commissioning phases of the privately financed plant.

Governor Seyi Makinde said the project reflects his administration’s commitment to using agribusiness and private sector partnerships to drive job creation and food security in the state. He noted that the factory will not only expand local sugar production but will also integrate thousands of residents into the formal economy through direct employment and structured farming partnerships.

The Oyo Sugar and Derivatives Industries Limited is projected to produce between 24 and 27 tonnes of brown sugar and 18 tonnes of molasses daily when fully operational. The molasses output is expected to support allied industries such as ethanol production, animal feed, and other derivatives, thereby broadening the value chain beyond sugar alone.

According to the state government, the facility will create more than 500 direct jobs across production, technical, and administrative roles.

In addition, about 1,000 sugarcane farmers in Oyo State are expected to be engaged through out-grower schemes and supply agreements with the factory, providing them with a guaranteed market and improved incomes.

Iseyin was selected for the project due to its favorable agro-ecology, available land, and proximity to existing farming communities in the Oke-Ogun zone.

The arrival of Saba Exports Ltd is expected to accelerate equipment testing, staff training, and compliance checks ahead of full commissioning in the coming months.

Government officials said the sugar project aligns with the broader objectives of the Omituntun agenda, which has prioritized farm settlements, agri-hubs, and private investment to reduce dependence on imported commodities and position Oyo as a regional agro-processing hub.

The Okanlomo Oodua and Bada Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi, has been appointed as the Patron of the Oyo Babaloja General-in-Council.

The appointment was conveyed in an official letter presented to Chief Sanusi during a courtesy visit by members of the Oyo Babaloja General-in-Council and the Oyo State Market Leaders Council at Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort, Ibadan.

The appointment letter was signed by the Oyo State Babaloja General, Alhaji Chief Asiwaju Yekini Abass Oladapo, popularly known as Alhaji Y.K. Abass, who was recently installed officially by the Oyo State Government as the recognized leader of market men and women across the state.

In his remarks, Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi expressed profound appreciation to the market leadership in Oyo State for finding him worthy of the honour. He described the appointment as a call to greater service and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote the welfare, unity, and economic advancement of traders and entrepreneurs throughout the state.

The Executive Chairman of Lagelu Local Government, Hon. Mudashiru Kamorudeen has distributed free-stand custom-branded umbrellas to a thousand of small business owners in the local government area in a major effort to support the informal sector.

The distribution exercise, coordinated by the council’s Department of Education and Social Services, took place on Tuesday in Iyana-Offa, the local government headquarters.

The free-stand umbrellas, emblazoned with the council’s logo are intended to shield traders and artisans from harsh sunlight and rainfall while they conduct their businesses in open markets across the area.

Speaking on the importance of the event, Hon. Kamorudeen praised the resilience of small business owners and said they were finally receiving the attention they deserve.

“Small business owners are hardworking, resilient, and are finally being treated right by this great administration,” the chairman stated.

He emphasised that small businesses remain the backbone of the local economy and assured continued support from his administration.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and they’ll continue to get all necessary support from the ‘TogetherWeCan’ administration,” he added.

The initiative is seen as a direct response to the daily challenges faced by market men and women, many of whom operate under difficult weather conditions with little protection.

Beneficiaries expressed delight at the gesture, describing it as timely and thoughtful. One of the recipients, Mrs. Adebisi Adeyemi, a provisions seller, said the umbrellas would greatly ease their operations during extreme weather.

Since assuming office, Chairman Kamorudeen has focused on welfare programmes targeting grassroots entrepreneurs and the informal economy, which sustains a large segment of the population in Lagelu Local Government Area.

The move has been welcomed by residents, who say it reinforces the chairman’s commitment to inclusive and people-oriented governance in the council area.

Oluyole Local Government has taken a major step toward strengthening its internally generated revenue (IGR) drive, as the Executive Chairman, Engr. Akeem Olatunji, on Saturday flagged off the development of a 30-hectare premium residential estate in partnership with MKH Properties.

The project, named The Legacy Estate, is situated at Operinde along the Ijebu-Ode Road and has been described by stakeholders as the first of its kind within the local government and a major addition to Oyo State’s evolving real estate sector.

The initiative reflects a growing shift by the council to attract direct investments capable of expanding its economic base, creating jobs, and unlocking new revenue streams beyond federal allocations.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Olatunji projected the project as part of his administration’s strategy to align Oluyole with the development blueprint of Governor Seyi Makinde.

“In Oluyole, we have decided to key into Governor Seyi Makinde’s developmental agenda.

“We will continue to partner with organizations that can drive meaningful development in our local government, and we are pleased to collaborate with MKH Properties,” he said.

He described the estate’s location as a prime investment corridor, noting that it offers one of the most viable opportunities for property acquisition in the area.

“This is one of the best locations where you can acquire landed property,” Olatunji added, signaling confidence in the project’s long-term value for investors and residents alike.

Also speaking, the Oyo State Commissioner for Public Works, Hon. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, expatiated the economic potential of the development, describing Legacy Estate as a landmark investment opportunity.

“Legacy Estate is a big one,” he said, urging residents and prospective investors to take advantage of the initiative.

Mogbonjubola went further to highlight the financial benefits of land investment, explaining that property acquired and held over time could appreciate significantly, potentially transforming buyers into millionaires within a few years.

He commended the developer for identifying the area’s strategic value, noting that the estate lies less than one kilometre from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and about 700 metres from the Circular Road, positioning it as a future growth hub.

The developer, according to the LG boss, is expected to deliver a modern residential scheme with ultra modern facilities that will not only elevate Oluyole’s profile but also stimulate ancillary economic activities within the council area.

Stakeholders at the event noted that beyond its immediate real estate value, the project reflects a deliberate policy direction by the Oluyole council to leverage public-private partnerships as a tool for grassroots economic transformation.

They equally noted that with increasing pressure on local governments to become more financially independent, initiatives such as the Legacy Estate project may well define how councils like Oluyole reposition themselves in a changing fiscal environment.
