A close observation of the current political climate in Oyo State reveals a landscape teeming with ambition. A simple scroll through social media shows dozens of posters and declarations, but it is clear that the noise of the crowd often drowns out the voice of experience.

This reality was further highlighted recently during an X-ray of the race by Isaac Brown of Fresh FM, who projected over 15 notable individuals within the PDP alone jostling to succeed Governor Seyi Makinde.

While the list of aspirants is long, leadership is not a game of numbers; it is a matter of capacity. As the Yoruba proverb says, “A kì í bẹ̀rẹ̀ nǹkan lágbede, ká má mọ ibi tí a ó ti rọ ọ́” (You don’t start a task in a blacksmith’s shop without knowing exactly how to forge the metal). In the crowded field of contenders, only a few possess the hammer, the skill, and the heat required to forge the next chapter of our state’s history.

As the administration of Engr. Seyi Makinde continues to set a high bar for governance in Oyo State, the inevitable question of 2027 is no longer simply about who comes next, but rather who is truly ready. Managing a state as vast, complex, and economically significant as Oyo demands more than ambition; it requires technical competence, administrative understanding, and proven preparation.

For many observers and residents alike, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi stands out not merely as a contender, but as a prepared hand capable of designing and executing the next phase of Oyo State’s development.

THE ACCOUNTANT’S PRECISION

Governance, at its core, is about the prudent management of resources. History has repeatedly shown what happens when political ambition is not matched with financial discipline. As a seasoned accountant, Adekanmbi brings a level of fiscal responsibility that is essential for a state seeking to expand its internally generated revenue (IGR) while sustaining large-scale infrastructure development.

He does not merely see figures in a budget; he sees the economic potential embedded in every naira. In an era where governments must achieve more with limited resources, such professional grounding is not just beneficial—it is indispensable.

EXPERIENCE FROM THE “ENGINE ROOM”

Perhaps the most distinguishing factor that sets Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi apart is his deep understanding of how the machinery of government truly works. Having served as Commissioner for Finance and later as Deputy Chief of Staff in the Pacesetter State, he has operated at the very heart of executive decision-making.

As Commissioner for Finance, he gained firsthand mastery of the state’s fiscal architecture, managing policies that shaped revenue generation and expenditure priorities. His subsequent role as Deputy Chief of Staff provided him with a broader administrative perspective, offering a bird’s-eye view of policy coordination, governance structures, and the delicate balance required to run a modern state.

In essence, Adekanmbi is not approaching governance as a newcomer learning the ropes; he is a practitioner who has already worked within the very engine room of the system.

A GRASSROOTS CONNECTION

There is an old saying that the king whose palace resides in the hearts of the people never lacks a kingdom. It is uncommon to find a leader equally comfortable in high-level policy discussions and everyday interactions within local communities.

Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi embodies this balance. Beyond his professional pedigree, he maintains a strong connection with the grassroots. He understands that the developmental strides recorded under Governor Seyi Makinde must extend meaningfully to every corner of the state’s 33 Local Government Areas.

He is not distant from the people; rather, he is shaped by their aspirations and everyday realities. This grounding ensures that policies under his leadership would not merely exist on paper but would translate into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens.

THE MOST PREPARED CONTENDER

There is a clear difference between desiring to be governor and being fully prepared for the responsibility. By every indication, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi belongs to the latter category.

Over the years, he has observed, participated in, and contributed to the governance architecture of Oyo State. His experience across critical administrative positions means he understands the existing development blueprint and the practical steps required to advance it.

He is not arriving to learn governance; he is arriving ready to build upon an already established foundation.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The 2027 governorship race is too important for experimentation. As another wise saying reminds us, you do not appoint an apprentice to pilot a ship through a storm.

If the objective is to sustain and deepen the progress recorded under the current administration, the logical choice is someone who has already contributed to building that foundation.

Among the many names being projected for the race, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi stands out as a competent, experienced, and well-prepared leader. In a field crowded with ambition, he represents stability, continuity, and the professional leadership Oyo State needs to move confidently into its next chapter.
