A Facebook user, Akande Akin Sanyaolu, has raised concerns over alleged telephone calls from individuals he identified as members of the campaign team of Barrister Sharafadeen Alli, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, who reportedly contacted him on October 7 and 8, asking questions about his electoral details.

According to Sanyaolu’s account, the callers allegedly asked him to identify his ward and polling unit and whether he possessed a Permanent Voter Card (PVC). He further claimed that he was asked to dictate the number on his voter card, allegedly in connection with monetary benefits.

Sanyaolu reportedly expressed surprise at the experience, questioning why anyone would expect him to exchange information connected to his voting rights for personal financial gain.

He described the alleged request as amusing, suggesting that he found it difficult to understand why a citizen would be approached to surrender the independence of his electoral choices for monetary consideration.

The allegation has raised questions about the conduct of political mobilisation and the need to safeguard voters’ personal information and electoral independence as political activities gather momentum in Oyo State.

However, the claims remain unverified, and no independent evidence has been presented here to establish the identities of the callers, the purpose of the alleged calls, or whether the individuals were officially acting on behalf of Alli’s campaign organisation.

The campaign team’s response was also not available at the time of writing.

Elections are a fundamental pillar of democratic governance.

Every eligible Nigerian has the right to make an independent electoral choice without intimidation, undue influence or improper inducement.

While political parties and candidates are entitled to mobilise supporters, engage voters and promote their programmes, such activities should be conducted transparently and in accordance with applicable electoral laws.

The distinction between legitimate political engagement and attempts to compromise voters’ independence is particularly important.

Citizens should be able to participate in the democratic process without feeling pressured to disclose sensitive electoral information or accept inducements that could undermine the credibility of an election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties, civil society organisations and other relevant stakeholders all have important roles to play in promoting voter education, protecting electoral integrity and ensuring that complaints about possible misconduct are appropriately investigated.

The objective must be to guarantee elections that are free, fair, credible and transparent, not elections compromised by deception, coercion, questionable financial inducements or other practices capable of eroding public confidence.

The democratic franchise is not a commodity to be traded for immediate personal benefit. It is a constitutional and civic instrument through which citizens participate in determining their collective future.

For Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole, sustainable development depends in part on credible institutions, accountable political actors and a political culture that respects the will of the electorate.

Every vote should count on its merit, and every eligible voter should be free to make a choice without improper pressure.

What must not be compromised, however, is the shared responsibility to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process and ensure that electoral competition is conducted in a manner worthy of public trust.
