In a country where leadership is often measured by words rather than actions, Professor Abdulrahman Raphael Afonja, PhD, PMP, F.NSE, F.ASCE, CEP, stands out as a beacon of service, intellect, and transformation. A technocrat with military discipline, academic distinction, and grassroots devotion, Afonja exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose and results.

A native of Ogbomosho in Oyo State, Nigeria, Prof. Afonja’s journey is one defined by service — from neighborhood security to national development. He is not just a politician; he is an engineer, educator, veteran, and philanthropist whose work spans over two decades across four continents.

From Ogbomosho to the World: A Legacy Rooted in Service

Born and raised in Oyo State, Prof. Afonja began serving his community early as a Boy Scout Master, a member of the Odua People’s Congress (OPC), and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria. This innate passion for public safety later led him to join the United States Army, where he served honorably as a Chemical Officer. He later advanced to the United States Air Force as a Program Manager/Engineer within the elite 27th Special Operations Civil Engineering Squadron.

In both his military and civil career in the U.S., Prof. Afonja earned numerous honors, including:

Multiple Doctoral Fellowship Awards

Academic Excellence and Innovation

An accomplished scholar, Prof. Afonja holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and is currently pursuing a second PhD in Information Sciences, with a focus on how data can improve public service delivery. His academic pedigree includes:

Strategic Leadership & Management, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Former Dean of Faculty

Former Director of Academic Affairs

Professor, City University of New York

Adjunct Professor, Southern New Hampshire University and SOWELA College, Louisiana

His teaching and research focus on civil engineering, mathematical modeling, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy. He is actively collaborating with professors at the University of Ibadan on green energy initiatives aimed at solving infrastructure challenges in Nigeria.

Transformative Public Service in Oyo State

In 2019, Prof. Afonja was appointed Commissioner for Public Works and Transport under Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration. Despite the global turbulence of the COVID-19 pandemic, his tenure marked a new era of innovation in infrastructure, digital transformation, and strategic planning in the state.

His responsibilities as Commissioner included:

Overseeing major road and transportation infrastructure projects

Introducing digital project management systems for transparency

Supervising multi-billion-naira construction and maintenance contracts

Developing strategic policy frameworks aligned with the Governor’s roadmap

Promoting community-inclusive governance

His visionary approach ensured that every kobo spent delivered tangible value to the people of Oyo State.

Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment

Prof. Afonja is also the Managing Director of three thriving companies:

Gletxtone Nigeria Limited

These businesses collectively employ over 900 Nigerians, with over 400 based in Oyo State, reaffirming his belief that the private sector must complement the government in creating jobs. His stance: “The government should not be the only employer. Our policies must attract investors and create room for youth-led enterprises.”

Championing the People: A Heart for Philanthropy

Prof. Afonja’s generosity is not limited to boardrooms or cabinet meetings. His philanthropic work spans healthcare, education, agriculture, and social welfare:

Pays tuition for university students

Provides bursaries, books, and uniforms for underprivileged pupils

Supports farmers with capital and inputs

Equips local security units with operational tools

Offers free medical checkups and treatments in underserved communities

Consistently donates food and clothing to the needy

His outreach programs have touched lives across Oyo State, particularly among the elderly, women, and youth.

The Road Ahead: Vision 2027 and Beyond

With an unmatched combination of academic depth, military discipline, entrepreneurial success, and political foresight, many in Oyo are looking to Prof. Afonja as a potential game-changing leader ahead of the 2027 political season.

His mission is clear:

> “I want to make Oyo State the engine room of Nigeria — with modern infrastructure, debt sustainability, enhanced IGR, youth empowerment, and governance that works for everyone.”

Prof. Afonja is not a man who merely dreams — he delivers. And as he has said:

> “We need leaders who focus on the future, not dwell on the past. Leaders who unite across political lines to get the job done. I am ready to sacrifice everything I have. I only ask that you walk with me on this journey.”

Whether in the lab, in the field, or on the policy table, Prof. Afonja continues to redefine what it means to serve.
