Western Coast Maritime Academy (WECMA), Badagry, Lagos, has appointed Dr. Akande Kazeem Babatunde, mni, as the Rector of the institution, in a move aimed at strengthening the Academy’s academic leadership, institutional development and strategic direction.
The appointment reflects the confidence of the Founder and management of WECMA in Dr. Akande’s wealth of experience in agriculture, education, strategic marketing, entrepreneurship, institutional management and leadership development.
Dr. Akande is a distinguished administrator and scholar with over fifteen years of progressive professional experience spanning agriculture, education, strategic marketing, entrepreneurship and institutional management.
He holds a PhD in Marketing, MSc in Educational Management, B.Agric. in Soil Science and Land Management, and ND in Agricultural Engineering.
He is also a Member of the National Institute (mni), having successfully completed the prestigious Senior Executive Course 47, 2025, at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru. He has further undertaken executive and professional training at ARMTI, ASCON and NIPSS, among others.
Before his appointment as Rector, Dr. Akande had served in various leadership and institutional capacities, including Managing Director of ECOLETECH Agribusiness Services Limited, Chairman of the Governing Council of the African Institute for Justice of the Peace, and Director of Studies at Easy-Prevarsity Educational Services.
His multidisciplinary background in agriculture, education, business development, strategic management and peacebuilding is expected to bring a broader perspective to the administration and development of WECMA.
As Rector, Dr. Akande is expected to provide strategic leadership towards strengthening maritime education and professional training, academic quality, institutional partnerships, innovation, discipline, entrepreneurship and sustainable development, while positioning WECMA for greater national and international relevance.
The Academy’s leadership expressed confidence that his appointment would contribute significantly to advancing WECMA’s vision of producing competent, disciplined and globally competitive maritime professionals capable of contributing to Nigeria’s maritime economy and national development.
Dr. Akande’s appointment further reinforces WECMA’s commitment to excellence, professionalism, innovation, leadership and lifelong learning as the Academy continues to expand its role in Nigeria’s maritime education and human-capital development.
