_Ibadan, Oyo State_ — Businessman and unionist Mayegun Sunday Olusegun Babanumi has formally joined the Accord Party and submitted his Expression of Interest form to contest the Ibadan North West/Ibadan South West Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 elections.

Babanumi was received into the party fold on at the Accord Party secretariat in Ibadan, where he was welcomed by party leaders and a crowd of supporters.[date]
Addressing the gathering, Babanumi said he left his former party over alleged political victimisation and a “selective system” that sidelined loyal members.

“I left a party where alleged political victimisation and a selective system are rife, for a party where all members are fairly treated,” he said. He added that some of his supporters had faced political backlash for their loyalty to him, and that he could not “continue to lead them into irrelevance.”

Describing the constituency as more than a political district, Babanumi framed his candidacy as a covenant with the people.

“Ibadan North West and Ibadan South West L.G is not just a constituency — it is a covenant. And today, I am making a covenant with every man, every woman, every trader, every student, every artisan and every elder in this great land,” he said.

He pledged to prioritise infrastructural development, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment if elected.
“I will not go to that hallowed chamber to warm a seat,” he stated. “I am a unionist who knows what representation is all about.”
Babanumi said all constituents, regardless of tribe or religion, deserved to benefit from the dividends of democracy. He described Accord as “an organised and people-oriented party in Nigeria,” and said Oyo State, Ibadan, and his constituency “must not be left out.”
Party officials at the event said Babanumi’s entry would strengthen Accord’s base ahead of the 2027 polls.

Babanumi is a well-known figure and has been active in union and community affairs in Ibadan.
