The long-running controversy surrounding the candidacy of Habeeb Balogun for Ibadan South-West State Constituency 2 has finally been laid to rest, following a court judgment that reportedly upheld the position earlier maintained by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
As consistently stated by the party, Habeeb Balogun will not appear on the ballot as its candidate for the constituency, a position the court has now upheld.
The judgment, delivered after weeks of legal battle, was described by the party as confirmation that its position was in line with its constitution, the Electoral Act and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Reacting to the verdict, ADC members across Ibadan South-West and other parts of Oyo State reportedly erupted in jubilation, describing the development as a victory for truth, justice, due process and internal democracy.

Speaking on behalf of party faithful, a chieftain of the party said:
“We told the world from the beginning that Habeeb Balogun cannot be our candidate. Some people doubted us, some mocked us, but today the court has proved us right. This is a victory for all genuine members of ADC.”
Another party member added:
“This judgment has vindicated our leadership. It shows that ADC is a party that respects the law and will not allow imposition. No one can force a candidate on the people.”
Party leaders noted that the ADC had maintained its position despite what they described as intense pressure, propaganda and blackmail from opposing camps. According to them, the party remained resolute because of its belief in the rule of law and the supremacy of its constitution.
They further stated that the ruling had strengthened members’ confidence in the party’s leadership and its commitment to upholding democratic principles without fear or favour.
Political observers in Oyo State described the judgment as a significant boost for the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that it could allow the party to focus fully on its campaign activities and grassroots mobilisation.
The party consequently urged all supporters, loyalists and stakeholders to remain calm, united and focused, while avoiding any form of provocation.
“We must now put this matter behind us and move forward as one family. Our eyes should be on victory and on delivering good governance to the people of Ibadan South-West Constituency 2,” the party stated.
The ADC reiterated its commitment to presenting a credible, popular and people-oriented candidate who would genuinely represent the interests, aspirations and yearnings of the people of the constituency.
The party also called on INEC to take note of the judgment and ensure strict compliance with the court’s decision in the interest of free, fair and credible elections.
