Sometimes, the true measure of leadership is revealed in how it responds when ordinary citizens lose their hard-earned businesses and livelihoods to disaster.
Yesterday, Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, demonstrated his commitment to the welfare of traders across the state by taking practical steps to support victims of devastating fire outbreaks at Aleshinloye and Bode markets, helping them rebuild their businesses and recover from their losses.
At Aleshinloye Market, where a fire outbreak last year destroyed businesses and livelihoods, Governor Makinde handed over newly rebuilt shops to 88 affected traders, giving them a fresh opportunity to return to business and rebuild what they had lost.
The intervention represents a significant step towards restoring economic activities and providing relief to traders whose investments and sources of livelihood were devastated by the unfortunate incident.

From Aleshinloye, the governor proceeded to Bode Market, which also suffered a devastating fire outbreak. In a move aimed at easing the burden on affected traders, he announced financial assistance of ₦250,000 for each of the 400 victims, amounting to a total of ₦100 million if paid to all beneficiaries.
For the affected traders, the intervention goes beyond a government visit. It represents hope, relief and a renewed opportunity to recover from the losses caused by the fire disaster.
Losing a shop and the goods that sustain a business can erase years of hard work, sacrifice and investment. By handing over rebuilt shops to the Aleshinloye traders and announcing financial assistance for the Bode Market victims, Governor Makinde has demonstrated a practical commitment to helping affected business owners get back on their feet.
Governance is not only about constructing roads, bridges and public infrastructure; it is also about standing with citizens in their moments of difficulty, responding to their needs and creating opportunities for them to rebuild their livelihoods.
Yesterday, the impact of governance was felt directly by traders who needed support to begin again.
Thank you, Governor Seyi Makinde, for turning the pain of fire disasters into renewed hope for affected traders.
When leadership responds to the suffering of the people with practical action, the difference is felt where it matters most—in the lives, businesses and livelihoods of ordinary citizens.
