Sources say the gathering is part of ongoing efforts to forge a broad-based coalition capable of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Opposition figures—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and Kashim Ibrahim-Imam—are currently holding an expanded strategy meeting in Abuja.

Sources say the gathering is part of ongoing efforts to forge a broad-based coalition capable of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Atiku confirmed the report in a post on his social media platforms on Sunday, saying, “H.E. Peter Obi and I just arrived at the Abuja Continental Hotel for the National Political Consultative Group (North) event.”

Atiku had reportedly offered Peter Obi the vice-presidential slot on a proposed single-term ticket. This offer, allegedly made during a private meeting in the United Kingdom earlier this year, would see Atiku serve only one term before handing over power to Obi, according to a recent exclusive report by The PUNCH.

“Atiku and Obi met earlier this year in the UK. That was where Atiku first proposed the coalition and urged Obi to be his running mate. Obi requested time to consult with his core loyalists,” a source told the newspaper.

Another insider confirmed growing consensus, stating, “Recent developments indicate Obi has accepted the VP slot, with both parties willing to sign a formal agreement. Atiku has assured he will step down after one term to support Obi’s presidency.”

This move marks a potential revival of the Atiku-Obi pairing, which was first seen in the 2019 presidential elections under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) banner. With internal challenges plaguing both the PDP and Labour Party (LP), coalition leaders are reportedly considering the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as an alternative political platform.

“The Social Democratic Party (SDP) was initially in the mix, but its ranks may have been infiltrated by the APC. Now the ADC is emerging as a strong alternative, and meetings with its leadership have intensified,” a source said.

Paul Ibe, Atiku’s media aide, confirmed coalition conversations are ongoing.

“His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are committed to building a broad-based alliance to unseat the clueless APC government in 2027,” he stated.

Peter Ahmeh, National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties and a close Obi loyalist, declined to confirm the single-term deal but emphasised the need for strategic unity.

“No comment on this until I speak with my oga. But I believe only a strong and united opposition can stop the APC.”

Meanwhile, ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu acknowledged that discussions with key opposition players were underway but did not confirm a formal approach from Atiku or Obi.

On his part, Peter Obi recently reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party in a viral video, saying, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”

Obi also criticised the government’s role in the internal crises plaguing the PDP and LP.

“These problems are deliberate and caused by the system. We need a functioning democracy with strong opposition parties,” he said.

Urging Nigerian youths not to lose faith, Obi emphasised the need for voter participation and accountability, asserting that true change will meet resistance from entrenched political forces.Travel guides

He also called for an age limit for politicians, noting that he would be 65 in 2027 and opposed to running in his 70s.
