A group of stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has rejected alleged attempts to impose consensus candidates on the party, warning that such actions could trigger a crisis that could weaken its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a stakeholders’ press briefing held on Monday at the Otunba Subomi Balogun Hall, University of Ibadan.

The Oyo APC concerned party stakeholders expressed “deep concern and dissatisfaction” over recent developments within the party, which if not checked, pose a threat to its unity and survival in the state.

The stakeholders specifically disowned a meeting reportedly held on May 1 in Ibadan, championed by Senator Ayoade Adeseun and Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle, allegedly on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as “null, void, and unacceptable.”

According to the communiqué, the meeting did not reflect the position of genuine stakeholders and was driven by “pecuniary interests” rather than the collective will of party members.

“The actions of these political dealers are condemnable and constitute a direct assault on internal democracy,” the group stated.

The concerned APC stakeholders also demanded the adoption of direct primary elections for the selection of party candidates, insisting that the process remains the most credible means of restoring confidence among members amid ongoing internal discord.

While not entirely ruling out consensus arrangements, the stakeholders maintained that such must emerge from unanimous agreement among all relevant stakeholders, receive written consent from aspirants, and be conducted transparently without external interference.

On party discipline, the group called for immediate sanctions against individuals accused of anti-party activities and gross indiscipline, including possible expulsion where necessary.

It accused some members of manipulating party processes for personal gain and warned that acts capable of undermining unity and electoral strength would be resisted.

The concerned stakeholders further raised concerns over possible defections of key party figures, particularly Senator Teslim Folarin, noting that his exit could significantly affect the party’s stability and electoral chances in the state.

It therefore urged the national leadership of the APC to take proactive steps to preserve unity and prevent the loss of influential members.

The stakeholders reiterated that residents of Oyo State view the APC as a viable alternative to the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde, stressing that such expectations can only be met through cohesion and strategic leadership.

On national appointments, the group congratulate Engr. Joseph Tegbe, acknowledged his nomination as Minister of Power but advised him to focus on his national responsibilities and avoid political activities that could destabilise the party in the state.

They also called for greater inclusiveness in party affairs, urging the leadership to recognize and involve founding members in key decisions.

It criticised what it described as attempts to sideline loyal party members in favour of individuals lacking grassroots support, insisting that candidate selection must be based on merit, competence, acceptability, and electability.

Reaffirming its loyalty to the APC, the stakeholders urged all party leaders to act with urgency and sincerity to strengthen internal democracy and ensure unity ahead of future elections
