Practically speaking, in today’s fast-paced world, digital literacy is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Recognizing this, Hon. Abass Adigun Agboworin, the Member representing Ibadan SouthEast/NorthEast Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, has taken a bold step in addressing youth unemployment and underemployment in his constituency.

Through the human capital development and strategic empowerment for Youths in ICT programme held on February 21, 2025, Agboworin has created a platform for self-reliance among the youth.

The impact of this initiative has been overwhelming as well 50 beneficiaries across Oyo State have testified to how the programme has equipped them with valuable digital skills, making them competitive in today’s job market. Some have already secured online jobs, while others have launched their own tech-based businesses. This is a significant step towards reducing dependency on government jobs and creating a self-sufficient generation.

It is an obvious fact that, for many years, one of the major challenges facing Nigerian youth has been the lack of access to digital skills training. While formal education provides theoretical knowledge, it often falls short in practical, market-driven skills. The Human Capital Development and Strategic Empowerment for Youths in ICT programme has bridged this gap, ensuring that young people in Oyo State are not left behind in the global digital revolution.

By focusing on ICT training, digital marketing, programming, and entrepreneurship, Agboworin has empowered participants with tools that enable them to compete both locally and internationally. Many of these beneficiaries now have the confidence to pursue careers in freelancing, e-commerce, and software development—fields that offer unlimited opportunities for financial independence.

The true measure of any empowerment programme lies in its impact on participants. Several beneficiaries have shared inspiring testimonies of how the training has transformed their lives. Some have secured remote jobs with international clients, while others have leveraged their newly acquired skills to boost their businesses. This is a testament to the fact that with the right opportunities, Nigerian youth can thrive and drive economic growth.

One of the beneficiaries who is also a constituent, Olamide Alade, shared his experience, saying that “Before this programme, I had no idea how to earn money online. Now, I am freelancing as a graphic designer and earning in dollars. I am grateful to Hon. Agboworin for this life-changing opportunity.”

Similarly, Olawale Ariyibi, another participant, stated: “The digital marketing skills I learned have helped me improve my small business. I now reach more customers online, and my sales have increased significantly.”

These stories underscore the life-changing impact of Agboworin’s vision.

Hon. Agboworin’s initiative serves as a model for sustainable youth empowerment. Unlike traditional empowerment programmes that focus on short-term financial aid, this initiative equips youth with lifelong skills. By fostering a culture of self-reliance, the program has positioned Oyo State’s youth for long-term success.

Other political leaders should take a cue from this and invest in similar skill-based initiatives. Rather than focusing on handouts, empowering the youth with digital skills ensures they can create their own wealth, reducing the burden on the government.

While the success of this programme is commendable, there is still more to be done. Expanding the initiative to accommodate more youths, particularly in rural areas, will further increase its impact. Collaborating with private sector players and tech companies could also provide mentorship and job placement opportunities for participants.

Furthermore, integrating ICT training into the curriculum of local schools will ensure that young people are introduced to digital skills early. With more investments in digital literacy, Oyo State can become a hub for tech talent in Nigeria.

Hon. Abass Adigun Agboworin has set a remarkable precedent with his Human Capital Development and Strategic Empowerment for Youths in ICT program. By prioritizing digital literacy, he has not only empowered over 50 youths but has also contributed to the broader goal of economic development in Oyo State. His initiative proves that with the right leadership and investment, Nigerian youths can achieve self-reliance and success in the digital economy.

As testimonies continue to pour in, one thing is clear: Agboworin is not just representing his people at the National Assembly—he is changing lives, one youth at a time.
