The governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Oyo State, Bimbo Adekanmbi, has declared that his experience in governance, exposure and understanding of the state’s socio-economic challenges have prepared him to successfully lead Oyo State as governor.
Adekanmbi made the assertion on Thursday during an interactive media engagement with media practitioners, political analysts, social media influencers and online news publishers at Themes, Jericho, Ibadan.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the APM candidate to outline his vision for the state and respond to questions on governance, workers’ welfare, poverty reduction, education, youth empowerment and continuity in government.
Adekanmbi said his close relationships with three former governors of Oyo State — Senator Rashidi Ladoja, the late Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala and the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi — exposed him to different approaches to governance and provided valuable lessons that would guide his administration if elected.
He also acknowledged lessons from the administration of the incumbent governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, particularly in the areas of financial management and the regular payment of workers’ salaries and pensions.
“I stand out. I have the experience and native intelligence to be the next governor of Oyo State.”
On workers’ welfare, Adekanmbi expressed confidence that he would sustain the prompt payment of salaries and pensions, noting that the Makinde administration had established a standard that future administrations should maintain.
“I won’t have a problem paying workers’ salaries and pensions because Governor Makinde has set a standard, and I have learnt a lot from his administration.”
The APM candidate further highlighted his record of interventions for vulnerable and underprivileged citizens, stressing that his programmes had consistently prioritised people in need.
“All my programmes are always targeted towards the underprivileged and indigents.”
Adekanmbi also commended some of the achievements of the Makinde administration, while observing that the government had not done enough to publicise some of its accomplishments.
“Makinde’s government is unfair to itself because it does not broadcast some of its achievements.”
Speaking on education and the increasing concern over out-of-school children, Adekanmbi said his administration would adopt accurate and comprehensive data to identify vulnerable communities and develop targeted interventions.
He stressed the importance of developing a comprehensive poverty map for Oyo State, arguing that reliable data would help government understand where poverty is most concentrated and direct resources and interventions accordingly.
“I’ll use accurate data to plan for out-of-school children and provide targeted intervention. We need a poverty map.”
Adekanmbi maintained that his governorship ambition was driven by the desire to build on the progress already recorded in Oyo State while introducing innovative policies to address emerging challenges and improve the welfare of residents.
He reiterated that experience, continuity, data-driven governance and deliberate interventions for vulnerable citizens would be central to his vision for sustainable development across the state.
