IBADAN – A chieftain of the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), Hon. Wasiu Nurudeen, popularly known as Oba-Aro, has questioned the Federal Government’s recent approval of ₦265 billion for road construction in Oyo State, describing the move as politically motivated and coming too late.
Speaking during a press conference with journalists in Ibadan, Oba-Aro expressed concern over the timing of the approval, asking why the Federal Government waited until the closing period of President Bola Tinubu’s administration before approving such a massive road project.
According to him, the late approval raises doubts over whether the projects can be completed before the end of the current administration.
He further criticised President Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023, arguing that the policy was implemented without adequate planning. Oba-Aro recalled that Tinubu and other opposition figures had opposed a similar subsidy removal proposal by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012.

Describing the ₦265 billion road approval as a “campaign strategy,” the APM chieftain maintained that Oyo State has already witnessed significant infrastructural development under Governor Seyi Makinde since 2019. He said roads have been constructed across different parts of the state, adding that the latest federal approval appears to be an attempt to influence voters ahead of the next general elections.
Oba-Aro questioned whether road projects are the most pressing need of the people at a time when many Nigerians are battling economic hardship. He urged the Federal Government to focus more on improving the nation’s economy and addressing the cost-of-living challenges facing citizens.
He also cautioned the electorate against what he described as “elephant projects” intended to sway public opinion, urging residents of Oyo State to remain vigilant as the election season approaches.
The APM stalwart appealed to voters to support the party’s presidential candidate, Engineer Seyi Makinde, and its governorship candidate, Hon. Bimbo Adekanbi, saying they would sustain the dividends of democracy and continue the developmental strides witnessed in Oyo State since 2019.
“The state belongs to us, and we prefer to allow Engineer Seyi Makinde to continue leading us here in Oyo State, just as President Tinubu led Lagos for several years,” Oba-Aro stated.
