The Oyo State House of Assembly has called on the state government to resuscitate trailer parks in Ogbomoso and in other locations across the state.

‎This according to the House is to ensure improved road safety and enhance the economic benefits of the state.

The call was contained in a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere state constituency, Hon. Abideen Adeoye Ogundare during the plenary session on Tuesday.

‎The session was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi.

‎In his motion, Hon. Ogundele stated that the trailer parks play a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion by providing safe places for trailers to park rather than obstructing major highways.

‎He mentioned locations like Odo-Oba, Orile-Igbon in Ogbomoso, Eleekara in Oyo and Akinyele in Ibadan where trailer parks should be resuscitated.

‎Speaking on the benefits the parks will bring to the state, the lawmaker said that the parks will not only ensure improved road safety, but will increase the state revenue base, provide employment and stimulate local businesses.

‎Ogundele emphasized that the idea of resuscitation of trailer parks is in line with Governor Seyi Makinde’s agenda of expansion of state economy, noting that a well-structured logistics and transportation management will be critical in ensuring seamless commercial activities and safeguarding the lives of residents and road users.

‎Passing the resolutions, Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, on behalf of the House called on the state and local governments to work together by conducting a comprehensive assessment of all the abandoned trailer parks across the state with a view to rehabilitating them for effective use.

‎”Establish new trailer parks in strategic locations in the state to reduce roadside parking and enhance road safety.

‎”Develop a public-private partnership model to ensure proper management and sustainability of trailer parks, allowing private investors to contribute to the development and maintenance of these facilities.

‎”Implement policies that will mandate trailers to use designated parks, with enforcement measures to prevent illegal roadside parking.

The Deputy Speaker also charged the House Committee on Transport to engage with relevant stakeholders including trailer drivers’ union, logistics companies and community leaders to gather insights and recommendations on the effective operation of trailer parks.
