A devastating fire swept through the Sango area of Ibadan in the early hours of Saturday, gutting at least three shops and resulting in the loss of goods valued at millions of naira.

The incident, which unfolded at approximately 4:30 a.m. behind the Fart Oil filling station, is believed to have been sparked by an electrical fault originating from a plugged-in freezer. The initial spark quickly ignited nearby flammable materials, causing the blaze to spread rapidly through a row of ten prefabricated shops.

Eyewitness accounts detailed how three of the structures were completely engulfed in flames before the arrival of the Oyo State Fire Service. The inferno consumed a variety of merchandise, including deep freezers, beverages, electronics, and other valuable items, leaving shop owners to grapple with significant financial losses.

While no casualties were reported, the affected traders are now faced with the daunting task of rebuilding their livelihoods and have issued a plea for assistance.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, stated that firefighters responded swiftly to the distress call. However, he noted that substantial damage had already been done by the time they reached the scene.

“Our team worked diligently to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to the remaining shops,” Mr. Akinyinka said. “Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction.”
He further urged residents and business owners to prioritize fire safety by ensuring all electrical appliances are switched off when not in use and by strictly adhering to fire prevention guidelines to avert similar tragedies.

In the aftermath of the fire, the affected traders are appealing to the Oyo State government and compassionate members of the public for support in their efforts to recover and rebuild their businesses.
