The Oyo State Security Council has issued a strong warning to illegal miners, bandits, illegal migrants, cultists, and other criminal elements operating in the state. The Council declared that the government is determined to take decisive action against such activities.

The warning was delivered on Thursday at a press briefing following the Expanded Security Council meeting, presided over by Governor Seyi Makinde at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan.

This expanded meeting, the first of the year, was attended by members of the State Executive Council, security chiefs, traditional rulers, and all 33 local government chairmen.

Security Measures and Directives

Speaking after the meeting, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, CP Fatai Owoseni (Rtd), explained that the meeting aimed to holistically assess the state’s security situation based on feedback from various leadership levels.

He urged residents to take security matters seriously, assuring them of swift responses to any concerns. He also encouraged them to use the state’s toll-free security emergency number, 615, to report any incidents.

The Commissioner of Police, Johnson Adenola, reaffirmed that the Council resolved to avoid ethnic or regional profiling in tackling criminality. He emphasized that every Nigerian has the right to reside peacefully in any part of the country.

Additionally, CP Adenola warned illegal miners to desist from unregulated activities, stating:

“They must obtain licences if they want to operate in the state.”

The Police Commissioner further revealed that the government would address boundary disputes to prevent conflicts. A meeting to resolve pending issues is scheduled after Ramadan. He urged residents not to resort to self-help but to follow legal channels in handling disputes.

Crackdown on Criminal Activities

The Council also issued a stern warning to bandits, cultists, and other criminals, stating that the government will not tolerate their activities. Security forces are prepared to take all necessary actions to bring offenders to justice.

Support from Traditional and Local Government Leaders

Speaking on behalf of traditional rulers, the Olu of Igboora, Oba Jimoh Olajide Titiloye, pledged full support for security agencies. He commended Governor Makinde for actively involving traditional rulers in the state’s security strategy.

Similarly, Sikiru Sanda, Chairman of the Association of Oyo State Local Government Chairmen, assured the government of total cooperation from all local council chairmen to ensure a safer Oyo State.

Government’s Commitment to the Rule of Law

The Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Abiodun Aikomo, reiterated Governor Makinde’s commitment to upholding the rule of law to enhance security. He affirmed that the government would continue enforcing the Executive Order on the Protection of Mining Communities against Insecurity and Exploitation, signed in 2023.
