The Executive Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Hon. Oluwaseun Olufade, has said that the achievements recorded by his administration in the last two years and four months of his three-year tenure are visible, verifiable, and reflected in various sectors across the local government area.
Olufade stated this during a radio interview on Splash FM 105.5 Ibadan, on the programme “Ijoba Ibile,” anchored by Abiodun Adewale, popularly known as Mr. Double A. The programme focuses on governance and activities at the local government level.
During the programme, the chairman was asked to highlight his administration’s achievements within 10 minutes. In response, he said 10 minutes would not be sufficient to account for the projects and interventions carried out under his leadership, noting that many of the initiatives were already visible to residents of Ibadan North.
He began by speaking on the administration’s digitalisation efforts, explaining that the council had been equipped with internet facilities to improve access and efficiency for staff and residents who visit the local government secretariat.
Speaking on education, Olufade highlighted several interventions targeted at primary and secondary school students within Ibadan North Local Government.
According to him, his administration provided tables, chairs, writing materials, and learning aids to primary schools across the council area. He added that school bags and sandals were also distributed to pupils in both primary and secondary schools.
The chairman also disclosed that his administration paid the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fees for 50 students identified as brilliant and dedicated.
He further spoke about his personal commitment to the education of Mr Mark, a student of Abadina College who emerged winner of a quiz competition organised within Ibadan North Local Government.
Following the victory, the student was given the opportunity to serve as the Executive Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government for a day.
Olufade said he pledged to support the student’s education through tertiary level and that the student had since gained admission into the University of Ibadan, with his education currently being sponsored.
On basic amenities, the council chairman said his administration had provided at least two boreholes in each ward of the local government, with more than 25 boreholes completed, commissioned, and operational.
He also disclosed that a number of solar-powered streetlights had been installed in some streets, markets, and residential areas to improve security and encourage night-time economic activities.
According to him, the administration has also donated eight transformers to different communities to address electricity challenges.
Highlighting infrastructure projects, Olufade said his administration had constructed approximately 25 kilometres of roads across Ibadan North Local Government.
He listed some of the projects to include the reconstruction of Awosika Road, Rotimi Williams Road, Oba Akinyele Ring Road, sections off Awolowo Road, Olive Estate internal roads, Agodi GRA roads, asphaltic repair overlay of Sabo Road, Wimpy Junction–Ibadan Golf Club axis, Veterinary Hospital Road, Isopako Road, Alaro Poly Road, Bembo Street, Ikolaba/Omowale Kuye Estate Road, Ayoola Drive Junction, New Bodija to Oluwo kekere Street, Bashorun opposite BCOS, and Bodija International Main Market Road.
The chairman also highlighted the construction of a fire service station at Bodija Market, describing it as an intervention aimed at improving preparedness and response to fire incidents.
He said his administration had also embarked on market redevelopment projects, including the construction of three modern motor parks, lock-up shops, and shopping complexes within Bodija Market.
According to him, one of the facilities was named after the late representative of Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Hon. Akinremi Olaide Jagaban, another after Oderinlo, while the facility located beside Woman Bank was named after the Babaloja of Bodija Market, Chief Alhaji Sunmaila Aderemi Jimoh (S.A.J).
Olufade stated that the S.A.J complex contains more than 500 lock-up shops, which were allocated to beneficiaries free of charge, as part of efforts to move traders away from roadside trading into a more organised business environment.
He said his administration has also constructed and commissioned the Pacesetter Ultra-Modern Car Park in front of the local government council, while the second phase, known as the Pacesetter Multi-Purpose Park, is currently under construction and nearing completion.
Speaking on agriculture, the chairman acknowledged that Ibadan North is largely metropolitan with limited farming space but said the council operates its own farmland where agricultural activities are carried out.
He added that during festive periods, the council supports workers and political functionaries by rearing chickens and rams, which are sold at affordable prices.
Olufade also said the council had sponsored beneficiaries under agricultural programmes and facilitated grants and loans to support farming-related businesses.
In the health sector, he disclosed that 300 residents had been enrolled in a health insurance scheme in partnership with the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA).
According to him, 87 beneficiaries under the scheme underwent major surgeries. He cited the case of a beneficiary who underwent hip replacement surgery, which he said would have cost about N24 million but was covered through the health insurance arrangement.
During the interview, the chairman was asked to respond to allegations that his administration planned to demolish areas including Iso Ewa, Ori Igi, and Iso Ero sections of Bodija Market.
Olufade denied the allegation, saying his administration was committed to bringing relief and development to residents rather than hardship. He attributed the claims to what he described as political actors attempting to discredit his administration.
He stated that he maintained cordial relationships with market leaders and traders, pointing to the decision of traders in the affected areas to select him as chairman of the day for their upcoming anniversary celebration as evidence of their relationship with his administration.
The Chairman of the Foodstuff Sellers Association, Bodija Chapter, Chief Adegbenjo Dauda, popularly known as Oke Darosa (Soloja), also spoke during the programme.
Dauda said those spreading claims about possible demolition were being influenced by political interests. He commended the local government chairman’s interventions at Bodija Market, saying the market had witnessed developments under Olufade’s administration.
He added that the chairman had maintained a positive relationship with traders and market leadership, while thanking Governor Seyi Makinde for appointing Olufade as chairman of Ibadan North Local Government.
The chairman was also asked about political dynamics involving his party, the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who is from Ibadan North Local Government.
Responding, Olufade said elections should be based on records and achievements rather than billboards.
He described Senator Alli as “Senator Billboard” while comparing the records of Alli and Ibadan North Federal Representative, Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle (DON).
He claimed that Oyekunle had recorded achievements despite spending a shorter period in office and said his party had previously defeated Senator Alli at his polling unit.
Olufade also expressed support for Governor Seyi Makinde and the governor’s preferred successor, Hon. Abimbola Adekanmbi, stating that he believed residents would support continuity based on the administration’s record.
He criticised the APC over previous promises concerning electricity supply, referring to statements made by political actors about resolving power challenges. He argued that Nigerians continued to experience electricity difficulties, adding that fuel costs had affected businesses and institutions.
In his closing remarks, Olufade thanked Governor Seyi Makinde for the opportunity to serve as Executive Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government.
He also appreciated residents, council workers, stakeholders, Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) for their support, assuring them that his administration would continue to focus on projects and programmes aimed at addressing the needs of the people.
