Member representing Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa North Federal Constituency, Hon. Dr. Anthony Adebayo Adepoju, has commended the Oyo State Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for his thoughtful advice and advocacy for the establishment of state police, describing the move as a crucial step towards addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Ibarapakan gave the commendation on Thursday, June 25, 2026 following the Senate’s passage of the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking the creation of state police, saying Governor Makinde’s consistent calls for decentralised policing have demonstrated leadership and foresight in the nation’s search for lasting security solutions.
The bill, which scaled third reading in the Senate, seeks to empower individual states to establish, fund and manage their own police forces alongside the Nigeria Police Force. If eventually enacted, the legislation is expected to enhance Nigeria’s security architecture by granting state governments the power and authority to protect lives and property within their respective territories.
The federal lawmaker noted that the proposed state police system would also go a long way in addressing the country’s security framework by enabling state governments assume more responsibility for security.

According to the Ibarapa-born politician cum technocrat, governors and local authorities possess better and strong understanding of the peculiar security challenges facing their communities and are better positioned to respond effectively.
He added that the proposed arrangement would improve grassroots intelligence gathering, facilitate faster responses to criminal activities and strengthen efforts to combat insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, communal conflicts and other violent crimes threatening communities across the country.
He, however, praised Governor Makinde for consistently lending his voice to the campaign for state police, despite divergent views on the issue. He described the governor as one of the country’s foremost and consistent advocates of security reforms, commending him for advising the federal government of Nigeria to do what is necessary for the Nigerian people.
According to the candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) for Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa North Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, Gov. Makinde’s commitment to state police reflects his native and deep understanding of Nigeria’s security realities and his commitment to promoting a security system capable of delivering effective community-driven services in the area of peace, justice and stability.
The lawmaker noted that Makinde’s style of leadership has proved that Nigerians in the North and South now have a better alternative for the position of president ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying Nigeria deserves a pragmatic leader who understands the country’s pressing issues and proffers solutions.
He urged members of the House of Representatives, state lawmakers and other stakeholders to support the constitutional amendment process to ensure the proposal becomes law. He noted that the bill will now proceed to further legislative processes, including concurrence by the House of Representatives and ratification by at least two-thirds of the state Houses of Assembly before it can be transmitted for presidential assent.
