AYETE, Oyo State — October 15, 2026

The Executive Chairman of Ibarapa North Local Government, Hon. Lateef Adebare Lawal Akorede, has made history by hosting the first-ever One-Day Chairman initiative in the local government, providing young people with a unique opportunity to experience leadership, participate in governance and contribute ideas towards community development.

The historic programme, held on Thursday, October 15, 2026, saw Miss Olanrele Tumininu Dasola, a student of Angel Heights College, Ayete, emerge as the One-Day Chairman after winning an intellectual competition organised by the council chairman.

The initiative attracted traditional rulers, political leaders, education administrators, teachers, students, security personnel and other stakeholders, highlighting Akorede’s commitment to educational development, youth empowerment and leadership training.

As part of the programme, the council chairman donated desktop computers and thousands of exercise books to public schools across the local government. The One-Day Chairman also inspected ongoing projects at the Ayete Divisional Police Headquarters and the old Ayete Community Town Hall.

From Angel Heights College to the Local Government Secretariat

The day’s activities commenced at Angel Heights College, Ayete, where Tumininu was picked up alongside her entourage and escorted to the Ibarapa North Local Government Secretariat to begin her symbolic official duties.

Following her inauguration, the young leader constituted her team, appointing a Chief of Staff and a Personal Assistant to demonstrate the administrative structures that support executive responsibilities.

The exercise provided her with practical exposure to public administration, leadership appointments, decision-making and the responsibilities associated with governance at the local government level.

One-Day Chairman Holds Security Meeting, Commends Traditional Rulers

Shortly after assuming office, Tumininu convened a strategic security meeting with traditional rulers and relevant security agencies operating within Ibarapa North.

She commended the security agencies for their efforts to protect lives and property, urging them to sustain their commitment and intensify measures to maintain peace across the communities.

She also acknowledged the contributions of traditional rulers to community development, particularly their roles in conflict resolution, peacebuilding and fostering harmonious relationships among residents.

The One-Day Chairman expressed her goodwill towards the royal fathers and wished them continued success in their service to their respective communities.

Tumininu Commends Akorede’s Developmental Strides

Addressing residents, traditional rulers, students, teachers, education administrators and other stakeholders at the secretariat, Tumininu expressed gratitude to the organisers and praised Akorede for introducing an initiative that recognises the intellectual abilities of young people while exposing them to leadership.

She described her emergence as the competition winner as both a personal milestone and a celebration of the leadership potential of young people in Ibarapa North.

The student commended the council chairman for prioritising education and youth development, noting that the initiative demonstrated his willingness to invest in the future of the younger generation.

She highlighted several developmental interventions by the Akorede administration, including the renovation of primary healthcare centres in Isamuni, Alabi and Asunara communities in Ayete; the revival of the bursary scheme for students from Ibarapa North studying in tertiary institutions; the construction of box culverts around Maku Grammar School in Tapa and other strategic locations; and the grading of roads to improve transportation across the local government.

She also commended the chairman’s efforts to strengthen security through the provision of motorcycles for security operatives, the refurbishment of security vehicles and collaboration with traditional rulers.

Tumininu further acknowledged the renovation of the Igangan Community Hall by Hon. Dr. Adebayo Anthony Adepoju, while appreciating Akorede’s efforts to improve infrastructure across the local government.

According to her, these interventions demonstrate the importance of responsive leadership and the need for public officials to prioritise projects that directly benefit residents.

One-Day Chairman Requests Renovation of Health Centres, Tapa Community Hall

While acknowledging the achievements of the local government, Tumininu identified areas requiring urgent attention, particularly healthcare, education and community infrastructure.

She appealed to Akorede to facilitate the renovation and equipping of primary healthcare centres at Oke Ola in Igangan, Bello Village and the six-bed facility in Tapa.

She explained that improving the facilities would strengthen access to healthcare services and provide residents with a better environment for receiving medical attention.

The One-Day Chairman also requested the reconstruction or renovation of the Tapa Community Hall, arguing that the intervention would promote fairness and ensure that communities across the local government benefit equitably from development initiatives.

On education, she called for the provision of computers, printers, photocopiers and reliable electricity to schools across Ibarapa North, particularly secondary schools.

She said the facilities would improve school administration, support teaching and learning, and enable students to access educational resources more effectively.

Tumininu also drew attention to the challenges posed by unreliable electricity supply and poor mobile network coverage in some communities, noting that these difficulties often limit students’ access to online educational materials and opportunities to expand their knowledge beyond the classroom.

As part of her symbolic executive duties, she directed relevant directors to prepare memoranda on the proposed projects for her consideration during her tenure.

Akorede Donates Computers, Thousands of Exercise Books to Public Schools

A major highlight of the programme was the presentation of desktop computers and thousands of exercise books to public schools across Ibarapa North by Akorede.

The intervention was designed to provide practical support for schools and encourage pupils and students to take their education seriously.

Tumininu described the donation of exercise books, writing materials and computer sets as an important investment in the future of the local government.

She noted that educational materials, however modest they might appear, could make a significant difference to students, particularly those who struggle to obtain the basic resources required for effective learning.

She urged students to remain focused on their studies, read widely, ask questions and work diligently towards achieving their ambitions, irrespective of their backgrounds or present circumstances.

According to her, the leaders, teachers, innovators, entrepreneurs and nation-builders of tomorrow are currently sitting in classrooms, and their future achievements will depend significantly on the choices they make today.

She also encouraged teachers to remain committed to their responsibilities, acknowledging their contributions to character formation, knowledge acquisition and the development of future generations.

Parents and guardians were urged to provide supportive home environments, while community leaders and other stakeholders were encouraged to invest in education through mentorship, infrastructure and sustained support for schools.

The One-Day Chairman also made a specific request concerning her school, Angel Heights College, Ayete, which Akorede immediately granted.

‘Leadership Goes Beyond Occupying a Position’ — Tumininu

In her message to young people, Tumininu emphasised that leadership should not be measured by the position a person occupies or the recognition received, but by the positive impact made on the lives of others.

She urged young people to embrace responsibility, honesty, service and discipline, stressing that leadership begins long before anyone assumes public office.

She encouraged students to demonstrate leadership through their conduct, respect for teachers and elders, assistance to others, environmental protection and the use of their talents to solve problems in their communities.

Tumininu further stressed that meaningful development required cooperation among government institutions, schools, families, traditional rulers, community organisations and young people.

She expressed the hope that the first edition of the One-Day Chairman initiative would establish a lasting tradition that would expand opportunities for youth participation, educational support and leadership development in Ibarapa North.

She thanked Akorede for creating the platform, describing the programme as a historic step towards strengthening education and youth development in the local government.

Traditional Rulers Applaud Akorede, Encourage Students

Traditional rulers who attended the programme commended Akorede for introducing an innovative initiative they described as beneficial to the educational development of Ibarapa North.

Among those present were the Onidere of Idere Land, the Asingangan of Igangan Land, the Elempe of Tapa and the Asawo of Ayete, the host community.

The royal fathers praised the chairman for recognising the abilities of young people and providing them with an opportunity to experience leadership in a practical setting.

Onidere of Idere: ‘No One Should Rig Out Idere Indigenes’

The Onidere of Idere Land disclosed that the latest achievement marked another milestone in the intellectual accomplishments of teenagers from his community, noting that Idere indigenes had won several competitions over the years.

In a humorous remark that drew laughter from the audience, the monarch warned against anyone attempting to rig an indigene of Idere out of an intellectual contest, expressing pride in the academic achievements of young people from the community.

He recalled that the first-ever One-Day House of Representatives Member initiative in Nigeria was organised by Hon. Adebayo Adepoju in 2024, with a participant from Idere emerging from the programme. He also referenced the second edition in 2025 and a Mathematics competition organised by the state government, which he said was won by an Idere indigene.

The monarch added that Tumininu, the One-Day Chairman being celebrated, was also from Idere, dedicating her achievement to her teachers at Angel Heights College, Ayete.

He commended Akorede for organising the initiative, declaring that the chairman had introduced something no previous local government chairman had done in Ibarapa North.

The traditional ruler offered prayers for Akorede, wished him well in his future aspirations and encouraged Tumininu to regard the opportunity as a motivation to work harder and remain committed to her studies.

He also urged other students to draw inspiration from the initiative by taking their education seriously and preparing themselves for future leadership responsibilities.

Asingangan of Igangan Prays for His Community’s Turn

The Asingangan of Igangan Land applauded the initiative, describing it as a commendable effort to promote academic excellence and recognise the intellectual abilities of young people.

He expressed the hope that a student from Igangan would emerge as a future winner of the competition and have the opportunity to serve as One-Day Chairman.

Elempe of Tapa Describes Akorede as a Different Administrator

The Elempe of Tapa praised Akorede for introducing a distinctive approach to local government administration.

He commended the chairman for looking beyond conventional governance activities to embrace a programme that directly involves young people in leadership and encourages them to develop their intellectual capabilities.

Asawo of Ayete Prays for Chairman

The Asawo of Ayete, whose domain hosted the historic event, also commended Akorede for the initiative and offered prayers for his continued success.

The monarch praised the chairman for making Ibarapa North proud through a programme that showcased the local government’s commitment to educational development and youth empowerment.

He expressed goodwill towards Akorede and prayed for continued success in his administration and future endeavours.

One-Day Chairman Inspects Ayete Police Headquarters, Community Town Hall

Following her address, Tumininu inspected ongoing construction work at the Ayete Divisional Police Headquarters.

During the visit, she assessed the progress of the project and directed that the construction work be completed without further delay.

The inspection reflected the security component of her symbolic official engagements and aligned with her earlier emphasis on protecting lives and property across Ibarapa North.

She subsequently inspected the ongoing upgrade and construction work at the old Ayete Community Town Hall, another important infrastructure project for the host community.

The visits provided her with an opportunity to observe ongoing projects and appreciate the responsibilities associated with monitoring public facilities and promoting community development.

Akorede: ‘We Must Prepare Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s Leadership, Not Just Celebrate Them’

Speaking on the initiative, Akorede said the One-Day Chairman programme was conceived to promote academic excellence, nurture leadership potential and expose young people to the practical realities of governance.

He explained that education must go beyond classroom instruction to include opportunities that build confidence, encourage critical thinking and prepare students for future responsibilities.

According to the chairman, the decision to allow a student to assume the symbolic position of chairman for a day reflects his administration’s belief that young people should not merely be celebrated as leaders of tomorrow but should also be deliberately equipped to become responsible leaders.

He added that the initiative would inspire students across Ibarapa North to take their studies seriously and understand that diligence, discipline and intellectual ability could open doors to remarkable opportunities.

Akorede reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to educational development through practical interventions, including the distribution of desktop computers and thousands of exercise books to public schools across the local government.

He noted that investment in education remained one of the most effective ways to secure Ibarapa North’s future, stressing that every child deserved access to the resources and opportunities necessary to fulfil their potential.

The chairman also expressed appreciation to traditional rulers, education administrators, teachers, parents and other stakeholders for their continued contributions to the development of the younger generation.

He maintained that his administration would continue to pursue initiatives that empower students, strengthen educational institutions and encourage young people to become active contributors to the progress of their communities.

The first-ever One-Day Chairman initiative has consequently emerged as a notable addition to Ibarapa North’s youth development efforts, combining academic recognition, practical leadership exposure, educational support and community engagement in a single programme.
