GSM Advocates, a pro-democracy and good governance group in Oyo State, has commended Governor Seyi Makinde for refusing to pay ransom to bandits, describing the decision as courageous and in the best interest of long-term security in the state.
In a statement issued in Ibadan on Friday by the deputy director, Bashorun Saintabey, the group said the Makinde administration has demonstrated firm resolve and a clear commitment to addressing the root causes of kidnapping and banditry instead of opting for short-term solutions that embolden criminals.
According to GSM Advocates, paying ransom to criminals only provides temporary relief while encouraging more attacks and putting more citizens at risk. The group noted that Governor Makinde’s approach prioritizes intelligence gathering, community policing, and strengthening security architecture across the 33 local governments.
“Governor Seyi Makinde has shown courage by refusing to throw money at bandits to secure a temporary solution. His administration has demonstrated a long-term commitment to tackling kidnapping and banditry in Oyo State,” the statement read.

GSM Advocates further lauded the governor for investing in Amotekun, collaboration with federal security agencies, and the deployment of technology to monitor flashpoints in the state. The group said these steps are already yielding results with improved security of lives and property in both urban and rural communities.
The group urged residents to continue to support the government by providing timely information to security agencies and by standing firm against any form of compromise with criminal elements.
GSM Advocates reaffirmed its support for the Makinde-led administration, saying Oyo State needs decisive leadership that puts the safety of the people above political convenience.
