The Oyo State Government has demolished the structure formerly known as De Castle Inn, following reports that it had become a hideout for criminals. The abandoned building, located along the Mokola–Agodi Gate axis, is set to be transformed into the new operational base for the state’s security outfits — Amotekun

Though it remains uncertain whether the owner will receive compensation, sources reveal that the state government acted on public outcry and security intelligence indicating that the premises posed a serious threat to public safety as hoodlums make use of the site for their illicit acts hence posing threats to life and properties of the neighborhood.

“The State Government under the leadership of His Excellency Engr Seyi Makinde has officially acquired the property,” As confirmed from the lands housing and Urban Development commissioner, Mr Akin-Funmilayo Williams “When government reached out to the owner after receiving complaints from the neighborhood, he reportedly stated that he couldn’t rehabilitate the building due to the government’s failure to compensate him during the road dualization project carried out under former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala. That project led to the demolition of several structures along the road.”

The land, along with the adjacent plot, will house a comprehensive security facility that includes an armoury, training ground, and administrative blocks for both Amotekun and Operation Burst.

According to the Honorable Commissioner, the proposed complex will feature:

Operations and administrative offices

Armoury and magazine

Auditorium

Motor transport workshop

Staff clinic

Command and control centre

Quarter guard

Training areas

ICT and media centre

Parade ground

Guard house

Sports area

Staff and visitors’ car park

Legal department, including an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) centre

Earlier in February 2024, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing Mr. Akin-Funmilayo Williams led a team on an inspection of the premises. Following that visit, the government confirmed receiving reports from neighborhood and security agencies that the abandoned hotel had become a den for criminals, frequent night robberies that has led to sleepless night.

However, even the security personnel stationed at the location confirmed that the building had been unoccupied for over decades and frequently served as a hideout for hoodlums. They also disclosed that the hotel’s owner has been out of the country for some time.

We enjoined the public to continue making use of the state Government mantra as popularly being mentioned by our Pragmatic Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde FNSE Dsc GSSRS: “If You See Something, Say Something And The Government will Act” he said.
