It is one thing to dream and another thing to see the dream come into fulfilment. A dream becomes reality when dedication and hard work come together. Many thanks to the governor of Oyo state, Engr. ‘Seyi Makinde for providing all necessary support for the establishment of the biggest Air Force base in the southern part of Nigeria, located in Ajia village, Ibadan.

The project is one of the lovely dreams of Rep. Abass Adigun popularly known as Agboworin, the House of representative member representing the good people of Ibadan Northeast/ Southeast federal constituency, which is fast becoming a reality.

From a comprehensive look, the important project is the biggest in the history of southwest Nigeria because of its significant importance it would serve in the security architecture of southwest part of Nigeria. I must say it takes being a visionary leader to key into such dream.

The role played by governor Makinde can never be over emphasized – from provision of massive land for the establishment of the Base to financial support and moral support for the success of the project.

Rep. Agboworin, having served in the military while in the USA, knows the significant importance of military bases, the main reason embedded in his move to champion the construction of Air Force Base in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital as they have in few other states in the country. He was the Vice Chairman, House Committee on Air force in the 9th Assembly, and he used all his experience and connections to facilitate the establishment of the base in his state.

This monumental development project, no doubt, have a lot of impact not only in the state but also the South West zone as far as the issue of security is concerned. Air Force bases have a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century, coinciding with the evolution of military aviation.

These bases have played a pivotal role in enhancing national defence capabilities and projecting airpower globally. The establishment of Air Force base enhances military strategy, and enables rapid air support and mobility during wartime.

Over the years, the evolution of Air Force bases has been closely intertwined with advancements in aviation technology and changing geopolitical landscapes. From humble beginnings as training grounds for aviators to becoming vital hubs for air operations, Air Force bases have adapted to meet the demands of modern warfare. Each base carries a legacy of courage, innovation, and sacrifice, reflecting the dedication of the men and women who serve within their walls.

The strategic significance of Air Force bases cannot be overstated, as they serve as launching pads for missions ranging from combat operations to humanitarian assistance. Their historical significance is a testament to the enduring commitment of air forces worldwide to maintain air superiority and protect national interests.

It is more interesting that the Base in Ibadan, which is still undergoing construction, would play a critical role in the security of the South West zone as it would be serving as key operational hub for defence and strategic missions. The base would house advanced aircraft, weaponry, and personnel ready to respond to potential threats swiftly.

The strategic positioning of the Base would enhance the flexibility and reach of the Military, projecting power and deterrence where needed most. Apart from that, it would make substantial economic contributions to the surrounding communities in the Ajia, where it is located as well as sping up other developments.

The base would offer a wide range of job opportunities from administrative roles to specialized technical positions, thus bolstering local economies.

The influx of military personnel and their families into the state would also stimulate growth in various sectors such as housing, retail, and services, thereby creating a symbiotic relationship that enhances the regional economy.

These partnerships would result in a steady flow of revenue for businesses, fostering a supportive environment for entrepreneurship and innovation within the community.

Moreover, the presence of the Air Force Base would often attract businesses, looking to cater specifically to the military population, further diversifying the economic landscape of Oyo State.

Furthermore, through various community outreach initiatives and support programmes, the Base would actively contribute to local charitable causes, educationalist endeavours, and infrastructure development projects.

All of these involvements would not only strengthen ties between the base and the community but also have ripple effects by uplifting the overall economic well-being of the region.

In essence, the economic contributions of the Base would extend far beyond its operational scope, leaving a lasting impact on the Ajia area in Ibadan, in which it is stationed.

A few other structures are also going to spring up including a model school, mega hospital that would be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and other establishments that would make the people of Ajia.

Equally, other components of the Base, apart from the School of Finance and Accounts, which have been vompleted and commissioned, are being worked upon and would be completed soon.
