The Oyo State Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education (AANFE) today held a colourful and impactful event at its headquarters in Ibadan to commemorate the 2025 International Literacy Day, celebrated under the global theme: “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era.”

The celebration highlighted the Agency’s commitment to equipping adult learners with essential literacy skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world. The event, attended by educators, learners, stakeholders, and dignitaries, also showcased the achievements of the 2025 literacy year.
During the ceremony, the Coordinating Director of AANFE, Mr. Oladejo O.J, presented a concise report on the activities and accomplishments recorded across the Agency’s literacy centres.

The Agency currently runs three major literacy classes, structured under three delivery units:


Classes Offered
1. Basic Literacy Programme – Equivalent to Primary Basic 3
2. Post Literacy Programme – Equivalent to Primary 6 Certificate

3. Advance Literacy Programme – Equivalent to Junior Secondary School Certificate
Delivery Units
Model Centres (34 centres): Managed by Adult Education Officers, including the AANFE Headquarters.
NGO Centres (20 registered NGOs): Each NGO contributes ₦10,000 annually to the government as part of the Agency’s internally generated revenue.

Basic Literacy Programme: 545 completers
Post Literacy Programme: 267 completers
Advance Literacy Programme: 190 completers
Total Graduated in 2025: 1,002 learners
These figures reflect the Agency’s expanding reach and continuous dedication to reducing illiteracy in Oyo State.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of a Leadership Award to the Chairman of AANFE, Hon. Ayo Olopoenia, in recognition of his outstanding contributions, visionary leadership, and unwavering support toward the advancement of adult and non-formal education in the state.
The award was presented by Alake Iya Pedro, alongside other staff members who described Hon. Olopoenia as a leader committed to innovation, staff welfare, and literacy development.
The 2025 International Literacy Day celebration at AANFE not only honoured global efforts to advance literacy but also underscored Oyo State’s steady progress in empowering adults through learning opportunities that align with 21st-century demands.
