As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, Mayegun Sunday Olusegun Babanumi, a prominent grassroots politician, international activist and aspirant for the Federal House of Representatives (Ibadan NorthWest/SouthWest) in the 2027 elections, has extended heartfelt encouragement to Nigerians, urging them to remain hopeful for a brighter and more prosperous future.

June 12, now officially recognized as Democracy Day, was instituted to honour the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election; a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic history. The day, which replaced the former May 29 observance, stands as a symbol of the Nigerian people’s enduring struggle for true democratic governance.

In a Democracy Day message, Mayegun Babanumi reflected on the nation’s democratic journey, commending Nigerians for their resilience and commitment to sustaining civilian rule. He stressed that despite the socio-political and economic challenges, Nigeria is on the verge of transformation, provided citizens remain united and actively engaged in democratic processes.

He particularly hailed the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, describing his administration as a beacon of progressive governance and development in the region. “Governor Makinde has shown that leadership rooted in transparency, accountability, and people-centered policies can truly transform lives. His impact on infrastructure, education, and youth empowerment cannot be overstated,” Babanumi stated.

Reaffirming his loyalty to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Babanumi described the party as the most experienced and people-focused political platform in the country. “The PDP remains the best hope for Nigeria. It has consistently championed democratic values and policies that benefit the masses,” he said.

As part of his message, he offered prayers for the people of Ibadan NorthWest/SouthWest Federal Constituency and the entire Oyo State, wishing them peace, progress, and prosperity. He encouraged citizens to stay informed, participate in governance, and continue to advocate for justice, equity, and sustainable development.

“Democracy is not a destination but a continuous journey. Let us walk this path together with hope, unity, and a shared vision for a better Nigeria,” Mayegun Babanumi concluded.
