The recent completion of the rehabilitation of Ipin River in Eruwa and the tarring of 200 meters from the river through New Eruwa as well as 150 meters from the river through Temidire road mark significant milestones in the infrastructural development of Ibarapa region in Oyo State.

These projects, spearheaded by the Oyo State Government under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde and facilitated by the Chairman, Ibarapa East Local Government, Hon Kazeem Owolabi Arogundade, aimed to enhance the region’s resilience to flooding, improve transportation, and stimulate economic growth.

Rehabilitation of Ipin River

The Ipin River, a vital watercourse in Eruwa, had long posed challenges due to its tendency to overflow during the rainy season thereby, leading to flooding. In October 12, 2024,the river collapsed due to heavy downpour and cut off over 100 communities in the area. Recognizing the need for intervention, the Oyo State Government initiated a comprehensive rehabilitation project to mitigate the impact of the collapse.

Key aspects of the rehabilitation include:

Dredging and Channelization: The riverbed was dredged to increase its capacity, and the channel was realigned to ensure a more controlled flow of water.

Construction of Retaining Walls: To prevent erosion and protect adjacent lands, retaining walls were built along critical sections of the riverbanks.

Road Rehabilitation: From the Ipin River bridge through New Eruwa, 200m road was tarred with asphalt. From that bridge through Temidire along Old Ibadan/Eruwa road, 150m was tarred with asphalt. The work has been completed.

These measures are expected to significantly reduce flooding incidents, safeguard agricultural activities, and improve the overall quality of life for residents.

Tarring of Road to New Eruwa

In tandem with the river rehabilitation, the road leading to New Eruwa has been tarred, enhancing connectivity and accessibility to the area. The previously dilapidated road posed significant challenges to commuters and hindered economic activities.

The road improvement project involved:

Installation of Drainage Systems: To prevent water accumulation and subsequent damage to the road, effective drainage systems were incorporated.

Signage and Road Markings: Clear signage and road markings were added to enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians.

The completion of this project has not only improved transportation but also opened up New Eruwa and Temidire market to increased trade and investment opportunities.

Broader Impacts on Eruwa and Ibarapa Region

The rehabilitation of Ipin River and the tarring of 200m with asphalt through New Eruwa and 150m from the Ipin river through Temidire are parts of a broader strategy to enhance infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in Ibarapa region.

These projects are expected to boost
agricultural productivity by reducing flooding and improving access, farmers can engage in more consistent and productive agricultural activities.

Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable development through these projects. The focus on engineering excellence, environmental sustainability, and community involvement ensures that the benefits of these initiatives will be long-lasting.

As Eruwa and the broader Ibarapa region continue to develop, the rehabilitation of Ipin River and the improvement of road infrastructure stand as testament to the positive impact of thoughtful and strategic governance.
