The lawmaker representing Ibadan Northeast Constituency 1 at the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon Abiodun Babalola has called on the Oyo State Government through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to reintroduce extracurricular organizations such as Boy Scout, Red Cross Society , Civil Defense Cadets and other humanitarian groups in Secondary Schools.

This was contained in a motion moved by the lawmaker during plenary sitting on Tuesday titled, “NEED TO REINTRODUCE EXTRACURRICULAR ORGANIZATIONS IN PUBLIC PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS TO PROMOTE DISCIPLINE, LEADERSHIP, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE”.

According to Hon Babalola, discipline, integrity, leadership and other values are central to how a society progresses and reinvents itself.

He added that these clubs would give pupils and students the opportunity to get first-hand insights on preparedness for life adding that the reintroduction would also serve as veritable agents of change to inculcate in the youths, loyalty, patriotism and thoughtfulness for others.

He said these attributes are ingredients for Future and aspiring leaders.

“Extracurricular organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Red Cross Society, Civil Defense Cadets, and other humanitarian groups play a significant role in the holistic development of young people by instilling discipline, leadership skills, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility.

” These groups, which were once actively present in schools, helped in shaping students into responsible and community-oriented citizens.
Further notes that in the past, these organizations contributed to nation-building by preparing young people for civic duties, emergency response, security awareness, and humanitarian activities.

” However, over the years, their presence in public primary and secondary schools has declined, leading to a gap in character formation, self-discipline, and community service among students.
Aware that structured extracurricular activities complement academic learning by enhancing students’ physical, mental, and social well-being.

The absence of these groups in schools has contributed to increased indiscipline, youth restiveness, and a lack of preparedness for real-world challenges.

” Reintroducing them will provide students with practical skills in leadership, crisis management, teamwork, and personal development.

Further aware that many countries around the world integrate voluntary service, disaster preparedness training, and youth paramilitary organizations into their school systems to cultivate law-abiding, patriotic, and service-oriented individuals.

“These programs not only reduce juvenile delinquency but also equip students with critical life skills that improve their confidence and decision-making abilities.

Observes that the reintroduction of these organizations in public schools will bridge the gap in moral education and discipline while also providing students with opportunities for personal growth and national service.

These groups will also help address bullying, violence, and security threats in schools by promoting values such as self-defense, respect for authority, and civic duty.”
