A wave of peaceful protests has erupted across Lagos State’s model colleges as parents push back against the government’s enforcement of a N100,000 per-term tuition fee. The Parents Forum of Model Colleges has formally notified the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of their intent to protest at the governor’s office in Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday.

At Igbokuta Model College in Ikorodu, the start of the term saw notably low student turnout, as many parents refrained from sending their children to school amid the tuition standoff. For those students who did arrive, teachers initially refused entry, adhering to the government’s tuition requirement. Efforts by parents to negotiate were unsuccessful, leading to heightened tension.

The situation at Igbokuta Model College was partially alleviated when the school’s principal, Mrs. Ajayi A.O, intervened, instructing teachers to allow students to register. Following her directive, more students were permitted to resume classes, although the issue remains unresolved.

Parents remain determined in their opposition to the tuition hike, arguing it is financially burdensome. Some students in JSS1 and SSS1 who had already paid a mandatory N70,000 were allowed into the school without issue, highlighting disparities in the enforcement of the tuition policy.

As parents prepare for Monday’s protest, they continue to urge the Lagos State government to reconsider the fee increase, stressing its impact on access to quality education in public model schools.
