The recent outcry by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, over Nigeria’s rising debt profile under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which has now hit ₦149 trillion, raises a big question: why is the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) not protesting against this?

The answer lies in political convenience and loyalty. APC, being the ruling party, has built its foundation on defending the government in power, even when the policies contradict the interests of ordinary Nigerians. Party members are bound by allegiance and fear of reprisal, hence they rarely challenge the president publicly.

During previous administrations, the APC, as an opposition party, did not hesitate to organize protests, criticize borrowing, and label it as “mortgaging the future of Nigerians.” However, now that the same party is in power, the silence is deafening.

This silence shows that many protests of the past were not borne out of genuine concern for Nigerians, but rather for political gain. Today, as debts pile up and the burden falls on citizens, APC leaders have chosen to protect their political structure rather than confront the truth.

The question Nigerians must ask is simple: Is governance about serving the people or serving the party? Until political parties place national interest above partisan loyalty, reckless borrowing and poor economic policies will continue unchecked.
