Under the visionary leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, Oyo State is witnessing an unprecedented infrastructural renaissance, with the ongoing transformation of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, into an international aviation hub standing as a hallmark of progress. This strategic upgrading not only signifies a leap in the state’s transport sector but also anchors its broader developmental aspirations across commerce, tourism, and international connectivity.

Governor Makinde’s administration recognized early on that modern infrastructure is the bedrock of sustainable economic growth. With Ibadan’s central location in the South-West and its proximity to Lagos, the state’s potential as a logistics and business hub remained largely untapped. The modernization of the Ibadan Airport is thus not a mere upgrade, but a deliberate investment in unlocking that potential.

The airport’s runway is being extended from 2,400 meters to 3,000 meters and widened from 45 meters to 60 meters. This upgrade allows the airport to accommodate larger, wide-body aircraft—an essential step in attaining international status and attracting more airlines.

A new, ultra-modern terminal building is under construction, equipped to handle up to one million passengers annually. This is a tenfold increase from its current capacity of 100,000 passengers, ensuring a smoother, more efficient travel experience and reducing pressure on the Lagos airport.

The administration has completed the construction of a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility. This development ensures that aircraft can refuel in Ibadan, reducing the need for diversions to Lagos or even international refueling stops—thereby saving time and operational costs for airlines.

The airport’s fire safety capability has been upgraded from Category 5 to Category 6, thanks to the acquisition of specialized fire trucks and operational vehicles. A new VIP Protocol Lounge has also been remodeled to offer dignitaries and top officials enhanced comfort and security.

The upgraded airport is set to strengthen Ibadan’s role as an economic gateway for neighboring states. With better connectivity, businesses in the agribusiness, manufacturing, and technology sectors will find Oyo State more accessible, boosting trade and employment opportunities.

With improved access and a modern terminal, Ibadan becomes a more attractive destination for tourists, conferences, and investors. The city’s cultural richness and historical significance are expected to draw more local and international visitors.

The airport project aligns with the ongoing development of the Ibadan Inland Dry Port, creating a seamless logistics corridor. Goods can now be flown in or out with minimal dependence on congested routes in Lagos.

With Ibadan Airport offering a viable alternative for international travel, especially for residents of Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, and parts of Kwara and Ondo States, pressure on the Lagos airport will be reduced, leading to a more balanced air traffic distribution in the region.

Governor Makinde’s diplomacy and commitment have also drawn support from the Federal Government. In a landmark development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport to international status. This federal endorsement not only brings national attention to the project but also facilitates increased funding, technical assistance, and regulatory approvals.

To support the airport’s transformation, the Makinde administration has embarked on several road construction projects, including the 21km Airport-Ajia-New Ife Express Road with a spur to Amuloko. These road networks ensure seamless ground transportation to and from the airport, boosting its functionality.

The comprehensive upgrade is slated for completion by March 2026, marking a new era in Oyo State’s infrastructural development. Upon completion, the airport is expected to serve as a major driver of investment, employment, and economic diversification for decades to come.

Governor Seyi Makinde’s commitment to transforming Ibadan Airport is a clear demonstration of purposeful governance. It reflects a deep understanding of how strategic infrastructure drives development and positions Oyo State for global relevance. The ongoing works at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport are more than bricks and mortar—they represent a future where Oyo thrives as an international destination of commerce, culture, and connectivity.
