The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has honoured the Distinguished Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Senator Dr. Yunus Akintunde, with the Best Senator of the Year Award.
In a statement signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Demola Babalola, the union described Senator Akintunde’s selection as a recognition of his sterling performance, impactful representation, and unwavering commitment to public service since his election into the 10th National Assembly.
According to the NUJ statement:
> “Given your contributions to the development of society, Oyo State, and Nigeria in general as a Distinguished Senator representing the good people of Oyo Central, the union deems it necessary to confer on you the NUJ Award of Best Senator of the Year during the 2025 Press Week.”
The award ceremony is scheduled to hold during the 2025 NUJ Press Week in Ibadan, an event that celebrates excellence and professionalism in public service and journalism.
Since assuming office, Senator Akintunde has demonstrated purposeful and people-centered leadership, sponsoring and supporting key legislative initiatives that have made meaningful impacts in vital sectors such as education, energy, environment, commerce, and regional development.
Beyond the chambers of the Senate, the distinguished lawmaker has touched countless lives through empowerment initiatives, skill acquisition programmes, and grassroots development projects, all aimed at uplifting artisans, youth, and professionals across Oyo Central and beyond.
An expert in Energy and Environmental Management, Senator Akintunde holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physics from Lagos State University, and a Ph.D. in Energy Studies from the University of Ibadan.
He currently serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South West Development Commission, and has previously chaired the Senate Committee on Environment, in addition to serving on several other strategic committees within the National Assembly.
Through his visionary representation and enduring dedication to service, Senator Yunus Akintunde continues to set a high standard for legislative excellence and people-oriented leadership — a legacy now officially recognized by the Oyo State NUJ.
