As part of activities marking the 2024 World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, the Oyo State Hospital Management Board (OYSHMB) has joined forces with the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, in an initiative led by Professor Ogunbosi to raise public consciousness about the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.

Speaking through the Chairman, Dr. Akin Fagbemi, the Board emphasized the urgent need for improved antimicrobial stewardship across health facilities in the state. Dr. Fagbemi noted that antimicrobial resistance has become a major global health challenge, with dire consequences if not urgently addressed.
“Antimicrobial resistance is no longer a distant concern, it is here with us.

“Every day, we see how inappropriate use of antibiotics leads to prolonged hospital admissions, higher treatment costs, and preventable loss of lives.

“This is why antimicrobial stewardship is no longer optional; it is essential,” Dr. Fagbemi stated.
To tackle this threat, the Board highlighted ongoing efforts under the Shedfield Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, a targeted initiative designed to promote responsible antibiotic use and strengthen best practices among healthcare workers.
The program is being actively implemented in key state facilities including:Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital, Oni Memorial Children’s Hospital

Healthcare teams in these centres are working around the clock to enhance compliance with global antimicrobial guidelines and improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Fagbemi called on healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public to unite in safeguarding the effectiveness of life-saving medications.
“We must all join this movement,” he urged. “Through collective action, education, and responsible antibiotic use, we can preserve these vital medicines for future generations.”
The Chairman reaffirmed OYSHMB’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in Oyo State and ensuring that global best practices remain at the heart of all medical interventions.
