…As Mogbonjubola warns Okada and Keke riders to comply within seven days or face arrest under new transport regulation.

Oyo State Government has begun the enforcement of a new digital registration and reflective jacket policy for all commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators across the state.

The Honourable Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Hon. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, made this known during a press conference held on Tuesday at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Ibadan.

Hon. Mogbonjubola announced a seven-day ultimatum for all commercial motorcyclists and tricyclists to comply with the new regulations. He warned that from next week, any rider found operating without proper registration or the official reflective jacket would be arrested and sanctioned in line with the state’s transport laws.

According to the Commissioner, the initiative is part of the government’s continuous efforts to enhance safety, accountability, and efficiency in Oyo State’s commercial transport sector.

“The Oyo State Government, through the Ministry of Works and Transport, has initiated the digital registration of all commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators,” he stated.

“This measure ensures accurate identification, proper documentation, and enhanced safety for both commuters and operators.”

Hon. Mogbonjubola further explained that the digital registration will also help streamline revenue collection, improve regulatory compliance, and promote professionalism among transport operators.

As part of the enforcement, all registered riders are required to wear reflective jackets officially issued by the Ministry.

The jackets, he said, will serve as visible identification, improve safety and security, and give the transport sector a more professional outlook.

The enforcement exercise, he added, will begin in Ibadan, the state capital, before expanding to other zones in a phased implementation approach.

“We urge all commercial riders to cooperate fully with this initiative,” the Commissioner said.

“This policy is not punitive but protective, it is designed to safeguard lives, improve service quality, and modernize the transport system in Oyo State.”

The Commissioner also disclosed that the Ministry is collaborating with local transport unions, security agencies, and community stakeholders to ensure smooth compliance and public awareness of the new policy.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Major Adesagba Adekoya (Rtd), assured the public that the agency would maintain zero tolerance for extortion or abuse of power by enforcement officers.

He pledged OYRTMA’s support for the riders, emphasizing that the enforcement would be carried out fairly and in the interest of public safety.

“We will ensure that our officers act responsibly while helping riders comply with government regulations designed for their safety and that of their passengers,” Adekoya said.

Also speaking, Mr. Bode Ajetunmobi, the consultant in charge of producing and distributing the reflective jackets, expressed concern over the low enthusiasm among operators and the proliferation of fake plate numbers in the state.

He revealed that over 10,000 reflective jackets had been produced, yet many registered riders had refused to collect theirs.

“We urge all riders to comply and collect their jackets. The government has simplified the process to promote accountability, safety, and better regulation within the transport system,” Ajetunmobi added.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Oyo State Chapter of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle and Tricycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Dr. Olugbode Solomon, commended the state government for the initiative, describing it as “long overdue.”

He assured that members of ACOMORAN would fully comply with the government’s directive in the interest of safety and the overall development of the state.

“We appreciate the government’s effort to bring order and safety to the transport sector. Our members will support and cooperate with this policy,” Dr. Solomon affirmed.
