A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State and Special Adviser to the Governor on Federal Constituency Matters, Hon. Dare Adeleke, has commended the lawmaker representing Ibadan North East/South East Federal constituency, Rep. Abass Adigun Agboworin, for his meaningful contribution to a debate on insecurity, which has been a major issue in Nigeria.
Hon. Adeleke, who was also the former Chairman of the Oyo State Pacesetter Transport Service (PTS), described the bold move and courage of the lawmaker to proffer workable solutions as being brilliant and impressive.
According to Adeleke, in a statement personally signed and made available to journalists in Ibadan, Agboworin, being a former military personnel, brought a unique perspective to the debate, which was also supported by other lawmakers.
He concluded that the people of Ibadan North East/South East Federal Constituency are proud of Agboworin’s representation in the green chamber of the National Assembly, urging him to keep up the good work.
The statement read, “I had the privilege of watching Hon. Abass Adigun Agboworin on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday, and I was thoroughly impressed.
“As a former military personnel in the United States Navy, he brought a unique perspective to the debate. His motion to increase military personnel was successfully passed, and I was struck by his passion and conviction.
“The people of Ibadan South East/North East are proud to have him representing them. Keep up the fantastic work, Hon. Agboworin.”
Recall during the plenary session on Wednesday, there was a proposition and counter-argument on whether Nigeria should hire foreign military mercenaries to confront non-state actors who hold the nation to ransom.
The House had debated and adopted a motion of urgent public importance moved by the lawmaker representing Bakori/Danja Federal Constituency of Katsina State, Abdullahi Dabai.
In his contribution, the lawmaker representing Damboa/Gwoza/Chibok Federal Constituency, Borno State, Ahmad Jaha, called on the Federal Government to engage mercenaries, noting that more advanced nations than Nigerians were doing the same.
Reacting to Jaha’s suggestion, Agboworin argued that the menace can be tackled through the engagement of young military officers who were forcefully retired due to the process of appointing Service Chiefs during the administration of Presidency of Muhammadu Buhari.
“I don’t think that the way to go is for us to engage foreign military mercenaries. Some young military officers were forcefully retired a few years ago. These young men can deal with the situation. They can get the job done.
“I want the House to know that we have a lot of brave personnel in the country. We have brains among the Air Vice-Marshals. We have brains among the Brigadier and Major Generals. We have brains among the Admirals that can handle the insecurity situation in this country. So, asking other country to send us machinery, to me as ex-military man, and to Nigeria as Giant of Africa, is an insult.”
