The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has expressed his sympathy following the tragic stampede at a Yuletide ceremony for children in Ibadan, Oyo State, which resulted in the deaths of 32 people.

His ex-wife, Naomi Ogunseyi, and radio owner Oriyomi Hamzat were among those arrested in connection with the incident.
In a statement released by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Moses Olafare, the monarch urged Ogunseyi and Hamzat not to be discouraged by the tragedy.

He also offered support to the victims’ families and called for measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The statement expressed condolences to the Oyo State government, Agidigbo Radio, and the bereaved families, with the Ooni stating, “We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the government of Oyo State, the organisers, and the bereaved families of the young souls lost.”

He also commended the swift response of the Oyo State government.
Highlighting the need for improved safety measures, the Ooni stressed the importance of adhering to safety standards and child welfare policies in public events.
He encouraged the organisers to learn from the tragedy and continue planning such events in the future, but with enhanced strategies to ensure the safety of participants.
“The lesson must be learned,” he concluded.
