In a bold move to restore professionalism and accountability in Oyo State’s public education system, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin (Ogbomoso South), Leader of the House, has led a motion calling for urgent action to curb rising indiscipline among teachers and non-teaching staff in public primary and secondary schools across the state.

The Motion was presented during Tuesday’s plenary with deep concern over the deteriorating standards of conduct among school personnel.

The House noted that “common indiscipline behaviours by teachers and non-teaching staff in public schools include absenteeism from school, lateness, non-preparation of lesson notes, non-compliance to posting instructions, non-completion of school records such as diaries, registers and students report cards, and involvement in examination malpractices.”

Lawmakers warned that these acts “pose serious threat to all levels of the educational system and undermine government’s efforts and resources invested in education.”

The motion acknowledged the strides made by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration, especially the recent approval for the procurement and distribution of tablets and laptops to teachers, aimed at easing lesson preparation and enhancing teaching delivery.

“Teachers have also been enjoying regular training and retraining which ought to boost their morale and improve their efficiency,” the motion stated.

However, the lawmakers observed that “inadequate supervision and monitoring of teachers and non-teaching staff by relevant supervisory bodies lead to their non-compliance to basic rules and regulations.”

Some staff reportedly abscond from duty without permission, engage in private businesses during official hours, and display gross misconduct.

Hon. Onaolapo and co-sponsors expressed concern that without proactive steps, the situation could further erode the quality of education in the state.

They urged the Executive Arm of Government, through the Ministry of Education, TESCOM, and SUBEB, to “intensify efforts on monitoring and supervision of teachers and non-teaching staff and ensure compliance to civil service rules and regulations.”

The motion also called for “strict disciplinary measures and prompt investigation and sanctions on erring staff which will serve as deterrent to others,” and emphasized that “delay in reporting at duty post should attract strict disciplinary action.”

The House resolved to commend Governor Makinde for his commitment to improving education and called for immediate implementation of mechanisms to ensure discipline, efficiency, and accountability in Oyo’s public schools.

Reacting to the motion, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly commended the sponsors for bringing to light a critical issue affecting the integrity of the state’s education system.

He emphasized that “teachers are the backbone of any progressive society, and their conduct must reflect the values we seek to instill in our children.”

The Speaker noted that while the government has invested significantly in teacher empowerment through recruitment, training, and provision of digital tools.

“These efforts must be matched by discipline, professionalism, and accountability at all levels. It is unacceptable for any public servant entrusted with shaping the future of our youth to neglect their duties or compromise standards.

This House will continue to support policies that promote excellence and ensure that our schools remain centers of learning, not zones of misconduct.”
