Once upon a time, the story of Oyo State was told in fragments of what could have been, of potentials left untapped, and of dreams postponed. Yet, history reminds us that Oyo has always been more than just another state in Nigeria; it is the custodian of ancient civilization, the heartbeat of Yoruba political culture, and a beacon of intellectual pride.

To rewind is to remember that Oyo once stood as the centre of progressive politics, where institutions like the University of Ibadan became fountains of knowledge for Africa. It is to recall how Ibadan, the capital city, became a confluence of warriors, thinkers, and builders, the very soul of the Yoruba renaissance.
But to reflect is to acknowledge that history alone is not enough. A people must renew themselves or risk being left behind in the tides of change. For years, the cry of the masses echoed through markets, schools, and rural communities: for good governance, for fairness, for a state where progress is not a slogan but a lived reality.

And then came a new chapter.

Under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, Oyo State has embraced a renaissance, a conscious rewriting of its story. Governance has shifted from empty rhetoric to data-driven, people-centred policies. The promises of yesterday are becoming the foundations of today.
In education, schools are no longer abandoned structures but learning centres restored with dignity. Primary and secondary education remain free, offering sustainable hope to young minds and ensuring that no child’s dream is hindered by financial barriers.
In infrastructure, roads are no longer mere pathways of dust but arteries of commerce linking farms to markets, communities to cities, and dreams to opportunities. From the Moniya-Iseyin Road to the Ibadan Circular Road, Oyo is building not just roads, but connections for prosperity.

In healthcare, hope is being restored. Clinics and hospitals are no longer neglected spaces but centres of healing, equipped and strengthened to serve both the rural farmer and the city dweller alike. From the smallest community clinic to the great halls of our tertiary hospitals, every citizen now stands a fairer chance at life.
New hands, skilled, compassionate, and qualified health workers have joined the system, breathing strength into its fabric. And through the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency, families once burdened by fear of medical costs now find relief, as policies of inclusion yield results that truly touch lives.
In agriculture, the state has taken bold steps through tractorization subsidies, agribusiness initiatives, and partnerships that empower farmers, making Oyo a basket of food security for the Southwest.
In economy and governance, transparency has become the hallmark. Citizens can now see where their taxes go; accountability is no longer a stranger in Agodi Secretariat.
This is not just governance. It is the renewal of trust between leaders and the led.
To traders in the market, farmers, artisans, pensioners, civil servants, youths and students, this renewal is not abstract; it is the living proof that leadership can work for the people.
The Modern Oyo State is therefore not a finished product, but a journey, a road paved with the ideals of equity, justice, and service. It is a state where culture meets innovation, where tradition embraces progress, and where governance respects the dignity of the governed.
This ode is a reminder that progress is not accidental; it is cultivated, it is fought for, and it is sustained by visionaries. Governor Seyi Makinde has not only carried the torch of this renewal but has lit up pathways for generations unborn.
So let the drums of Oyo sound again, not only in memory of its glorious past, but in celebration of its rebirth. Let us rewind to remember, reflect to appreciate, and renew to advance. For indeed, Oyo is rising, not in whispers, but in songs of progress.
Ode to the Modern Oyo State.
Ode to Leadership that serves.
Ode to a people rewriting their story.
