There are strong indications that key opposition figures in Nigeria may consider leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections due to the party’s deepening leadership crisis

Top politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, are reportedly engaged in high-level consultations over the party’s future.

The uncertainty follows the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to suspend recognition of all factions within the party’s leadership, citing a Court of Appeal ruling and ongoing legal disputes over its internal structure.

Political sources warn that the crisis could significantly weaken the ADC’s chances in the 2027 elections, particularly its ability to field candidates for presidential, governorship, and legislative positions.

Insiders revealed that the legal battle may extend beyond the timeline for party primaries and submission of candidate lists, creating further complications.

“If the crisis persists and members contest under the ADC, they risk being stranded if the party later loses recognition, as they may not be able to defect afterward,” a source explained.

With INEC declining to recognize any faction, any congresses or conventions conducted by the rival groups could eventually be declared invalid.

The situation has reportedly triggered emergency consultations among opposition leaders, with meetings expected to take place in Abuja after the Easter period to determine the way forward.

As part of contingency plans, alternative political platforms are being considered. Among them is the Action People’s Party, viewed as relatively stable, as well as the New Democratic Congress, a newer party associated with former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson.

Although both parties currently have limited representation in the National Assembly, they are seen as viable options due to their relative stability and lack of internal disputes.

Sources said opposition leaders are approaching the matter cautiously and may keep their final decision confidential to avoid tipping off the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

These consultations are part of broader political realignments taking shape among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
