It is no longer news in Ibadan that Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja will in a few days wear the Olubadan crown. For decades, his name has sat comfortably on the lips of elders and in the pages of tradition as “the Olubadan-in-waiting.” A prophecy long spoken has now ripened into reality, after he patiently, humbly, and resiliently climbed the rungs of Ibadan’s unique chieftaincy ladder.

For many, this moment represents the fulfillment of destiny. Oba Ladoja’s life has been a journey of honour and achievement. From his academic brilliance to his leadership in politics and his steady rise through Ibadan’s traditional hierarchy, he has carried himself with dignity at every stage. The Olubadan stool is not won through politics or wealth, but through Ibadan’s famed succession system, where seniority and tradition determine the crown. His story is a reflection of Ibadan itself strong, enduring, and graceful.

Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja was born on September 25, 1944, in Gambari, a village near Ogbomoso in Oyo State. From his youth, he displayed excellence that would later define his life. His brilliance in academics earned him a place at Olivet Heights and eventually took him to Belgium, where he studied Chemical Engineering at the prestigious University of Liège between 1966 and 1972. His education abroad marked him as a man of vision, prepared for leadership on a larger stage.

Upon his return to Nigeria, he joined Total Nigeria, where he worked for 13 years and distinguished himself as a skilled professional and leader. In 1985, he ventured into private business, building successful enterprises in shipping, agriculture, manufacturing, and banking. These accomplishments established him as a man of foresight and enterprise, laying the foundation for his later role in politics and public service.

His political journey was equally remarkable. He entered the Senate in the Third Republic under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1993. A decade later, in 2003, he became Governor of Oyo State under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), defeating the incumbent, Lam Adesina. Throughout his political career, Ladoja remained a central figure in Ibadan and Oyo State, admired for his courage, independence, and enduring influence.

Oba Ladoja began his traditional journey in the 1980s as the Mogaji (family head) of the Ladoja family in Isale-Osi. He was promoted to Jagun Olubadan in 1993, the first step on the 22-stage ladder of succession. Over three decades, he climbed steadily Ajia, Bada, Asaju, Ekerin, Ashipa, Osi until he attained the position of Otun Olubadan in 2021, second only to the Olubadan himself. With the passing of Oba Olakulehin, tradition now makes it his turn to ascend the throne.

And now, as Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja prepares to mount the stool of Olubadan, Ibadan rejoices. His life stands as a shining example of patience, wisdom, and grace. To his people, he is not only a king but a father, a custodian of tradition, and a beacon of unity. May his reign be long and prosperous. May peace and progress flourish under his leadership. May Ibadanland continue to thrive in greatness as its destiny blossoms anew beneath the guiding hand of her 44th Olubadan.

Kabiyesi o! Long live Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland!
