N585m fraud: N30bn recovered by EFCC not mine – Betta Edu
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, who has been suspended, disclaims ownership of the N30 billion recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). President Bola Tinubu suspended Edu on January 8 in response to allegations of N585.2 million fraud.
Tinubu instructed the EFCC to thoroughly investigate all financial transactions related to her ministry.
The EFCC revealed that they have recovered N30 billion and are currently probing over 50 accounts. In an EFCC bulletin titled “EFCC Alert,” it was stated that the recovered sum has been remitted to the Federal Government.
In response, Edu’s lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, issued a letter on Wednesday denying any knowledge of the recovered funds.
The letter asserts that no proceeds of crime have been linked to Edu’s bank accounts, and criticizes the presumption of guilt in media reporting prior to establishing innocence, emphasizing the importance of fair and unbiased coverage.
