The wife of the Oyo State governor, Engr. Tamunominini Makinde, has empowered over 850 nursing mothers across 33 local governments, charging them to provide life-saving nutrition to their children. This initiative coincided with the commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week, highlighting the importance of breastfeeding for infant health.

Mrs. Makinde emphasized the significance of constant breastfeeding, stating, “It fosters a unique bond between mothers and children, laying a foundation of love and care.” She stressed that breastfeeding is the first step towards giving children the best start in life, providing essential nutrients and antibodies.

Breast milk, according to Mrs. Makinde, serves as a natural vaccine, equipping babies with necessary antibodies to fight diseases.

She urged private employers to grant maternity leave, ensuring employees can promote early breastfeeding and give their babies a healthy start.

Dr. Muyideen Olatunji, Executive Secretary of Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, reinforced the importance of exclusive breastfeeding within the first 1,000 days for a healthy life. “This period is crucial for optimal growth and development,” he emphasized.

The event featured interactive sessions, where healthcare professionals addressed common breastfeeding challenges and offered practical tips.

Nursing mothers shared their experiences, receiving support and encouragement from peers and experts.

To further support nursing mothers, the Oyo State Government announced plans to establish breastfeeding-friendly facilities in public spaces, promoting a conducive environment for breastfeeding.

As the event concluded, nursing mothers received cash gifts, food items, and diapers for their babies, symbolizing the state government’s commitment to their welfare.

In a closing remark, Mrs. Makinde expressed her dedication to promoting maternal and child health, pledging continued support for nursing mothers in Oyo State.

This initiative sets a precedent for community leaders and stakeholders to prioritize breastfeeding promotion, ensuring a healthier future for Oyo State’s children.

The event showcased the state government’s efforts to reduce infant mortality rates and improve healthcare outcomes.

Mrs. Makinde’s advocacy emphasizes the critical role of breastfeeding in fostering a healthy and nurturing environment.

The Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board plans to expand breastfeeding education and support services across the state.

Nursing mothers expressed gratitude for the empowerment program, praising Mrs. Makinde’s commitment to their welfare.
