The Oyo State contingent, comprising 320 athletes, 65 coaches, and 36 officials, is gearing up for the 22nd National Sports Festival, “Gateway 2025,” in Ogun State. The festival, scheduled from May 16 to 30, will feature competitions in 32 sports, including 27 compulsory and 5 optional sports.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, announced that Governor Seyi Makinde has approved an N80,000 minimum wage for athletes, coaches, and sports officers on contract appointments. This gesture aims to boost morale and motivate the team for the national festival and future tournaments.
The Commissioner pledged that instant rewards would be offered to athletes securing gold, silver, and bronze medals. Adequate provisions will also be made to ensure the team’s participation is convenient and memorable.

“The Torch of Unity will be presented to the Executive Governor of Oyo State on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 to herald the commencement of the festival, create awareness and sensitise members of the public about the national sports fiesta,” the Commissioner added.

Hon. Adegoke expressed optimism about the team’s performance, citing their commitment and preparations. The Executive Assistant on Sports Development admonished athletes to maintain a good image, emphasizing that outstanding performances would be rewarded.
She remarked that, “this act of magnanimity on the part of Governor Makinde will not only boost the morale of the athletes, but will also serve as an impetus for them in the forthcoming national festival and subsequent tournaments.”

The Commissioner’s confidence stems from the athletes’ dedication to their craft, evident in their intense training sessions and unwavering focus on achieving excellence. She noted that the athletes’ passion for their sports, coupled with the support provided by the state government, positions them for success on the national stage.
Hon. Adegoke urged the athletes to translate their hard work into medal-winning performances, thereby bringing pride and glory to Oyo State. She emphasized that the entire state is behind them, cheering them on and expecting a strong showing in the competition.
The events are scheduled to take place in Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode, Sagamu and Ikenne, Ogun State.
