The Oluyole Local Government of Oyo State has lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for his bold and visionary reforms in the traditional institution in Oyo.

He described the honour conferred on governor Seyi Makinde by the paramount ruler of Akure kingdom, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, as a recognition of his pan-Yoruba leadership and cultural diplomacy.

Governor Seyi Makinde and his wife, Engr. Tamunominini were yesterday conferred with the chieftaincy titles of Aare Omoluabi and Yeye Aare Omoluabi of Akure Kingdom by His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi CFR, the Deji of Akure Kingdom.

In his felicitation message on Saturday, the Executive Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Asiwaju Akeem Olatunji, said Makinde’s approach to redefining the role of traditional institutions in governance and community development was “worthy of emulation across Nigeria.”

The council boss praised the governor for championing legal and structural reforms that have restored dignity and relevance to traditional rulers in Oyo State.

“Governor Seyi Makinde’s participation and address at the coronation anniversary in Akure reflected not only his deep roots in Yoruba history but also his deeply rooted belief in the importance of our traditional institutions.

His chieftaincy title in Akure clearly shows the governor’s respect for heritage and his understanding of its role in modern governance,” the statement read.

Makinde equally used the occasion to call for the depoliticisation of traditional institutions. He argued that traditional rulers must be seen as partners in governance, not pawns in political contests.

Aligning himself with the governor’s address at the event, Olatunji said, “Traditional institutions must be reimagined as enduring pillars of identity, legitimacy, and cohesion. When rooted in law and supported by policy, they can effectively complement modern governance.”

Olatunji noted that the governor’s reforms, particularly the signing of the Oyo State Chieftaincy Amendment Law, have streamlined the process of chieftaincy appointments and restructured traditional councils for improved efficiency.

He also emphasized that Makinde’s work has restored confidence among royal families and communities in Oyo State.

“From the successful integration of traditional rulers into the Amotekun security framework to the decentralisation of leadership at the grassroots, Makinde has brought respect and purpose back to our royal institutions,” Olatunji added.

He stated further that Makinde’s vision aligns with the legacy of Yoruba forebears like Bashorun Oluyole, the legendary warrior and administrator, for whom the local government is named.
