In a significant milestone for Oyo State’s energy landscape, Phase 1 of the 11 MW hybrid power solution Independent Power Project (IPP) is set to go live. This achievement marks a crucial step towards addressing the state’s energy needs and powering the Light Up Oyo project in the long term.
The IPP, a public-private partnership between the Oyo State Government and Elektron Energy, has been years in the making. With Phase 1, which boasts a capacity of 5 MW, ready to be commissioned on December 6 2024, the project is poised to make a substantial impact on the state’s energy sector.
According to Governor Seyi Makinde, the 11MW hybrid power solution is a critical component of the state’s energy strategy, aimed at reducing dependence on the national grid and promoting economic growth.
Once the final phase is completed, the IPP will serve as the main power source for various infrastructural facilities in Oyo State, including Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, 12 healthcare facilities, such as Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital and State Hospital, Ring Road, judicial complexes at Iyaganku and Ring Road, the Oyo State Secretariat and the House of Assembly, as well as a selection of schools within a defined catchment from the generation plant at the State Secretariat.
In addition to the IPP, the Oyo State-Shell Nigeria Gas project is also progressing smoothly. According to officials, the project is part of a broader effort to set the right foundations for future growth and development in the state.
With the launch of the 11MW hybrid power solution, Oyo State is poised to become a model for energy sufficiency in Nigeria, demonstrating the potential for innovative and sustainable energy solutions to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for citizens.
As Governor Seyi Makinde noted, the IPP is a key initiative aimed at addressing the state’s energy needs and driving economic growth. With Phase 1 set to go live, Oyo State is one step closer to achieving its goal of energy sufficiency.
