The current uproar between the Nigeria labour congress,Trade union congress on one part and the federal government of Nigeria on the other side calls for critical thinking
The two holy books (Qur’an and the Bible) says that ,the sweat of the labourer must not dried off meaning that after work ,the worker is expected to be compensated or remunerated
The current imbroglio in Nigeria is naturally expected but the question on the lips of many Nigerians today is that, is the labour really fighting for a just course? Is the labour union not agitating wrongly ? Are the labour union not being selfish as against the rest of the country? The questions goes on and on
According to the latest Nigeria population commission, the Nigeria projected population as at 2024 February stands at 240million
,the total number of government paid workers are not up.to 2.8% of the above population according to bureau of statistics
It is a known fact that ,whenever their is increment in salaries of workers in Nigeria in the past, food prices goes up in a geometrical progression which automatically leads to inflation and hardship in the land ,and that automatically bounces on the remaining 97.2% of the population
The federal and state governments supposed to had being co opted in the negotiation meeting from onset whenever there is genuine agitation for salary increment but the labour always get it wrong by ignoring the states from the beginning which always lead to shortchanging the state and local government workers from the largess
Lets go back to.the main issue, what the labour union are naturally expected to do presently ,is to stand for the whole country and not her workers alone
They supposed to.demand for the following from government of the day
(1) set up a good economic team that will comprise of tested and trusted economists ,in and out of government, who will help in revamping our nosediving economy, with good economic policies that will bring out our dying economy from the doldrum she found herself
(2) Nigeria boarders should be open for a year by allowing foods and other important commodities that we dont produce in abundance to come in ,which will be strictly guided by price control by the federal government
(3) government should prioritizes more on assisting existing and upcoming farmers with arable lands, seedlings and grants to really go back to farm by doing a follow-up with the use of government Agric extension officers to support and monitor what goes on ,on the farm land .this is the only way of restoring our moribund agricultural sector and after the stipulated one year of opening the boarder ,the boarder will be shut as done in the 60’s to 70’s by Japan
(4) Government should as a matter of urgency create more job opportunities for our graduates who kept on graduating yearly without any white collar job , yes I agree that ,government cannot get job for all and people should embrace self sustaining jobs (entrepreneurship) at the same time , government should create an enabling and conducive environment for graduates to thrive
(5) The federal government must as a matter of urgency provide an enabling environment for farmers such as grants, availability of tractors ,plougher ,fertilizers, seedlings , training on the field etc to farmers with supervision by the federal ,state and departmental ministry of Agriculture
On the dilapidated and dying National grid of Nepa.or IBEDC or whatever the name is called , by now what the federal did at Asokoro in Abuja ,by passing the NEPA wire or cables underground which allows for easy usage of light even when there is heavy rain should have being done throughout the country
Pre paid metres should be given out to end users freely and being paid for later through the bills , the federal and state governments should seek foreign support in having federal and state grids which would help in providing enough energy production, this singular act.will provide an enabling environment for foreign investors to come to the country to invest ,like we have NESTLE, UAC , DUNLOP,MICHELIN , PZ ,KINGSWAY , K Allen etc in the past, this will provide more than enough jobs for our graduates and non graduates and better live will once again be experienced and enjoyed by all and sundry
Lastly on petroleum, the federal government must be sincere for once ,the solution to our problem is to revamp our refineries by bringing in experts who will help in repairing our dead refineries and efforts must be geared towards diversification into gas which is the trend the world is going presently
If the above are strictly adhere to ,then Nigeria and Nigerians are good to go.
A stitch in time.saves nine
