On Sunday evening, a building under construction for the fast-growing food brand Item7 collapsed around the Mokola-Dugbe axis of Ibadan, Oyo State. The incident, which has gone viral on social media, has sparked widespread reactions and concerns about construction standards in the area.

Eyewitnesses reported that the structure, still in its developmental phase, suddenly gave way, causing debris to spill onto one lane of the busy Dugbe–Mokola Road. Emergency response teams promptly arrived at the scene to evacuate the rubble and clear the obstruction, ensuring the safety of commuters and residents.
While no casualties have been reported, the collapse has ignited discussions among netizens regarding the building’s design and structural integrity. Some commentators pointed out that the building’s height might have made it susceptible to strong winds, especially during the rainy season. A TikTok user remarked, “The structure height is much to be honest. No building beside Item7 Dugbe Ibadan has the same structure that will accept the wind and humidity of that location.”

In response to the incident, the Oyo State Government has expressed its determination to conduct integrity tests on buildings in the area to prevent future occurrences. The Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Williams Akin-Funmilayo, stated that the government would take decisive action to ensure the safety of structures within the state. He emphasized the importance of adhering to building regulations and standards to safeguard lives and properties.

This event underscores the urgent need for stringent enforcement of construction regulations and regular inspections to prevent such incidents. As urban development continues to accelerate in Ibadan and other parts of Nigeria, ensuring the structural integrity of buildings remains paramount to public safety.
