As Nigeria marks this year’s Democracy Day, Hon. Adebayo Babajide Gabriel, popularly known as Jagaban, a serving member of the Oyo State House of Assembly representing Ibadan North Constituency 2, has applauded the resilience of Nigeria’s democracy and called for greater investment in grassroots governance and political education.

Speaking from Ibadan in a statement released to commemorate June 12, Hon. Babajide Gabriel Jagaban said the day serves not only as a remembrance of the late Chief MKO Abiola’s historic presidential election victory in 1993 but also as a reminder of how far Nigeria has come and how much further it must go.

“June 12 stands as a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic identity.

It is a day that reminds us that power truly belongs to the people. But the strength of democracy must be felt most where it matters at the grassroots,” he said.

The two-term legislator emphasized the importance of deepening democratic dividends at the local level, noting that state and local institutions must reflect the yearnings of ordinary citizens.

He further reiterated his commitment to delivering impactful legislation and constituency-focused governance.

“As a representative of the people of Ibadan North Constituency 2, I have seen first-hand how strategic policies and legislative actions can directly improve lives.

We must not only celebrate democracy, we must also live it, defend it, and make it work for the common man,” Hon. Jagaban added.

A vocal advocate of youth empowerment and education reform, Hon. Babajide Gabriel used the occasion to encourage young Nigerians to take active roles in civic processes and decision-making platforms.

According to him, the democratic space must be made more accessible, transparent, and participatory.

“We must prepare the next generation of leaders by making civic engagement part of our culture.

If we want a more responsive government tomorrow, we must educate and empower today,” he said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 26 years of civilian rule, Hon. Babajide Gabriel praised the efforts of democratic institutions and the people of Oyo State for continually upholding peace and progress through the ballot.

He also extended his respect to the leadership of Oyo State, particularly Governor Seyi Makinde, for creating a people-oriented governance structure that continues to attract national attention.

“This democracy may not be perfect, but it is ours, and it is growing.

Let us protect it. Let us improve it. And most importantly, let us use it to build a better, united, and just Nigeria,” Jagaban concluded.
