In a passionate address marking Democracy Day, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar did not mince words as he delivered a scathing critique of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), holding them responsible for plunging Nigeria into severe hardship over the past nine years.

Atiku, a key figure in Nigerian politics and a former presidential candidate, emphasized the need for unity among opposition parties to restore hope and effective governance to the nation. He underlined the significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s democratic journey, paying homage to key figures who championed democracy despite numerous challenges.

While acknowledging the value of democracy as a form of government, Atiku lamented that the nation’s democracy remains fragile and has not delivered the prosperity and liberty expected by its citizens. He squarely placed the blame for the current state of affairs on the APC, accusing them of presiding over unprecedented levels of violence, insecurity, and extreme hardship across the country.

In his address, Atiku criticized not only the ruling party but also opposition parties for their failure to present a united front against the APC. He highlighted the importance of forming a cohesive coalition to effectively challenge the ruling party and provide a credible alternative to Nigerians.

As a seasoned politician who has vied for the presidency in the past two elections under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku called on all political stakeholders to prioritize coalition-building and work together to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic future. He stressed that the fortunes of the nation depend on political parties setting aside their differences and forging alliances that serve the best interests of the country and its people.

Atiku’s impassioned address serves as a call to action for both ruling and opposition parties to take stock of their roles in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape and to prioritize the unity and collaboration necessary to move the country forward towards a more prosperous and equitable future.
