Details of the bill showed that Oyo State will have Oyo town as the capital, while Ibadan State will have Ibadan city as the capital.

In an unprecedented move, a bill to amend the 1999 Constitution to create new Oyo and Ibadan States has passed the second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, which was sponsored by Akeem Adeyemi, the son of the late Alaafin Adeyemi, and six others, intends to create Oyo State and Ibadan State.

Details of the bill showed that Oyo State will have Oyo town as the capital, while Ibadan State will have Ibadan city as the capital.

The constitution alteration bill was passed for a second reading on Tuesday during the plenary session.

The bill proposes the division of the existing 33 local governments, which would be shared among the two states.

The bill was referred to the Constitutional Review Committee for further legislative action.

This move is a continuation of actions by the lawmakers where new states are being intended for creation to join the country’s thirty-six states.
