In a proactive step to mitigate flooding and promote environmental sustainability, the Executive Chairman of Ibadan Northwest Local Government, Alhaji Rahman Adepoju, has officially flagged off the dredging of the Onireke River at Agbarigo in Ward 9 of the council area.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Alhaji Adepoju highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating that the dredging project aims to improve water flow, prevent flood disasters, and boost economic activities in the region.
He urged residents to support the government’s efforts by refraining from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the river, warning that culprits would face strict sanctions. “Keeping the river clean is crucial to the success of this project. Environmental pollution and health hazards can arise from poor waste disposal practices,” he stated.

The council boss further emphasized that the current administration, under the leadership of Oyo State Governor, Engr. Oluwaseyi Abiodun Makinde, is committed to promoting environmental awareness and responsible waste management across the state.

According to him, collaboration between the government and the community is key to preserving natural waterways and ensuring sustainable development. “When we work together, we can maintain a healthy ecosystem and enjoy the long-term benefits of a flood-free environment,” he said.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Leader of the House, Council Secretary, Chief of Staff, Councillors, and Supervisory Councillors. Also in attendance were the Director of Works, Director of Finance, and the Internal Auditor, all led by the Head of Local Government Administration, Mrs. Rachael Olabode.
